According to what I found on Google, the cultivar you're asking about is a cultivar of the spectabilis type so I'm guessing at this time of year in Zone 5 it's either dormant or soon will be. D. spectabilis is a reliable spring blooming perennial in my zone that goes yellow & dormant not long after flowering. If the roots were well-established when you planted it, I'd expect it to show up again next spring. It's been a tough old bird in my garden beds for many years. I doubt it will survive winter if you're growing it in a container altho' the WFF website says it's hardy to Z3. A plant needs to be hardy to at least two zones colder than its range in order to come through winter in a container. You can sink the container into the ground to increase your chance of seeing it survive the winter. An added note--I've never fertilized or fed any of my bleeding hearts over the past 30 years. As with most perennials, they simply don't need it if they're growing in healthy soil. If your soil is healthy & rich in organic material, your perennials will thrive without fertilizer, especially chemicals. Below is a link I found to information on your plant at White Flower Farms. Dicentra 'Luxuriant' is a good choice for heat and drought tolerance, though it may go dormant during extreme conditions and reemerge with adequate moisture and cooler temps. There is no concensus about it's lineage. It is listed as both Dicentra exemia and Dicentra formosa. 'King of Hearts' is an old complex hybrid from crosses of D. perigrina(Japan), D. eximia and D. formosa, ssp. oregona. It has been around for 25 years or more, but since it doesn't set seed, can only be propagated by division or tissue culture. It is said to be intolerant of heat and drought. Another selection with deep pink/near red flowers is D. 'Baccanal', but it is not a clump forming variety and tends to spread over a large area. 'Zestful' also has pink flowers, but is not as vigorous as 'Luxuriant'. All require moist soil in partial shade. In your Zone, they would probably tolerate full sun, but continuous sun exposure tends to fade the flowers. Rb

Nice photos, Paul. I will add a few, too. Patann, the Sutherland Gold Elderberry is awesome. At the same time I planted it, I also planted an Elderberry Black Beauty. It is a very slow grower, slow to leaf out in the spring and then just doesn't really do anything. In the photo below, you can see my Sambucus Sutherland Gold after 2 years...and you can hardly even make out the Sambucus Black Beauty to the left of the Sutherland) I've removed it now, and I also removed the lowest underbranches of the cedar behind it, so I've got a big opening there to stretch hostas back deep into the garden. By the way, that same year, I planted 3 more Black Beauties in another garden, and although 2 of them are alive, they also aren't thriving. That's why I call it a dud plant. There is a newer cutleaf black sambucus called Sambucus Nigra Black Lace. I haven't researched it, but the photos are gorgeous. I may try that in another spot and if it does well, consider adding it into my hosta bed. These are June photos. The Sutherland Gold has gorgeous bark and form. The buds are extremely beautiful before it even leafs out. Then, it has this wonderful chartreuse look that is very reminiscent of some of the Japanese Maples. I do wish they'd maintain their chartreuse throughout the summer , as it depreciates into a pretty darklime green in mid July. Overall, I'd give this shrub a 9.75 for ease and beauty. It's not exactly brain surgery, :-) and I haven't heard of that plant having a fussy reputation, so just about any reasonable way that works for you would probably be fine. If the root ball is really large, you may want to cut it down the middle at a natural division before you dig it out of the ground. That way a thick rootball won't try to slip away from the blade. Helps to have a sharp shovel, too. If you water a lot, you could certainly do it anytime. Even now, if you were willing to sacrifice the flowers. I've done that many times and never lost a patient yet. Good luck with it! You sound like at least a semi-experienced gardener...trust your intuition. Lots of transferrable skills in gardening.
