Aspen don't naturally grow anywhere near the seashore in CA. They are high mountain trees there, ~7-8k feet starting around King's Canyon NP and suffering in gardens at lower elevations; also if they actually grew there their suckering roots would be problematic for the slab and neighbor anyway. In that latest foto it might be a birch, still hard to see. Very tight restrictions and not sure you are going to be able to fill that space with plant material other than a vine/bougainvillea on a trellis, honestly. See what the Extension Office sez, surely they must know someone that has a similar issue. Dan

Hermie, If you do check out Lowe's, keep in mind all stores are not equal with their selection or care. I have one in particular that I like and know that they get there plants in on Thursday (I asked). WTS, I've gone and found nothing in the way of hoyas. Other times, I might walk out with 2, 3 or 4. You may be able to get them to request a particular variety for you. I've never done it as I like the "hunt". I think Teisa is right. This is a good time of year to be searching. Oh, and don't turn down a Lacunosa if you see one. It's one of the easiest to bloom and smells divine. One more thing, if you go ahunting while it's still cold, take along a paper bag or two. The cold goes right thru the plastic bags most stores use. Let us know how you make out. Gail

grandbb, Here is a link to the Arizona Native Plant Society. They have a series of eight booklets - sort of like field guides - that should be helpful too. Plus, they area very affordable at $2.25 each. You can purchase them locally at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix or Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior, but if you have time you could order them before your visit. I hope this helps. "Most experienced gardeners would advise you not to plant a single species but ..." I believe this is because, to a large extent, "experienced gardeners" generally think that more plants -- even hoarding plants ---- is better (and more "interesting") than a simple, strong landscape design statement. Many gardeners look for ways to morally justify their desire for more varieties of plants. The decimation of a single variety is actually a fairly rare occurrence ... unfortunate if it happens, but is not very likely with tried and true plants.
