Composting and wood-chip mulch ?s

Ralph Thayer

I have small flower beds around my house – total area about 200 sq. ft.

Which, if any, wood-chip mulch can be expected to break down (and so serve as an ingredient of compost) over the time of a year or so? I have been told that cypress all but never breaks down. Is there a wood-chip mulch I could lay out this year and work into the soil next year to any advantage? Would it make any difference to rake it up, instead, next year and add it to the mix in a composter?
