Need help identifying a tree fungus

,

I need help identifying a growth that is taking over a large tree close to our house. I recently purchased our home, and have noticed a ton of small branches littering the yard under the tree. We also had one large branch break during a storm in the fall. The previous owners removed a few of the limbs, but I'm worried that the tree is losing its strength. Since it so close to the house and driveway, I'm wondering if at the least, I should remove the limbs, or the whole tree. I've posted two pictures of what the green fungas looks like, and any help would be appreciated!

Mosses and lichens, not fungi. They aren't hurting the tree and won't be related to the branch dropping.

Plus one: Lichens and mosses beautiful and interesting organisms, utterly unconnected to any issues this tree may or may not be having. A good "crown cleaning", if done by a certified and knowledgeable arborist, could alleviate some of the branch droppage. And any tree-in particular, healthy trees with much leaf mass-can catch the wind in a storm and lose a branch. But nothing to do with moss/lichens.

How often do you water and for how long? How high/low do you mow? The weeds can be handled by something like Spectracide with Atrazine. But I would wait until the grass returns. I have gotten excellent results for fungal disease using ordinary corn meal. It is an organic approach that the experts at Texas A&M swear up and down does not work, but it has worked for me every year since 2002. It is a complete cure in 3 weeks. I am suggesting you try that because corn meal doubles as an organic fertilizer. Your spots don't look that much like a disease, but it could be. If you did not have the really healthy stand of grass right by the sidewalk, it would look more like disease. I would hit it with corn meal at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet now and again in 3 weeks. If you don't see new grass coming up in 4 weeks, then get a commercial fungicide that works in your heat/precipitation zone - read the label closely to see how to apply and when. Corn meal has no restrictions on how or when. Then once you get the grass growing, zap the dollar weed (I assume dichondra or some other easy weed) and let it grow. And if you have not already raised your mower to the highest setting, do that yesterday.

Not sure, but I'm going to guess that it is an outcropping of what is commonly called the Jack O'Lantern mushroom. They are quite variable in their development, but that color sure doesn't change. This is the time of year for their appearance. Here is a link that might be useful: Take a look

I have vast areas of garden covered with Vinca (periwinkle)which have been very healthy for years. In the last year, a bug or fungus, small raised brown spots on the underside of the leaves, has been spreading quickly. The leaves curl and the plant does not grow like the healthy ones - it doesn't spread and cover ground it grows straight up and after a couple of months - it turns brown and dies. I have been unable to identify what this is and how to deal with it. Can anyone help? Thanks

Yea looks like that! I just googled it. Seems like I'm pretty much just waiting until fall in that case... Some places say its from dryness but that is NOT my problem. Some say fertilize some say DONT fertilize. I basically have crappy undrained soil.

a free show of mother nature...

and some suggest a sign of good air quality ...

enjoy it ...

as to the rest.. first.. ID the tree ... here.. with pix of the leaves ...

then decide if its a quality .. long lived tree ...

then step back.. and decide if its overhanging anything of value.. like your life or your house ... maybe the neighbors.. if they are worthy ...

AND THEN DECIDE IF TRIMMING IS NEEDED...

if its a carp tree.. one basal cut at ground level.. solves all your problems ... in other words.. old, crumby trees may not be worth investing in pruning ... and my be one of the reasons the prior owners sold and ran away ...

at this point.. you dont really need to spend money.. for the ID ... and that is where we begin ...

and a pic of the whole situation... house.. tree .. etc ... will get you opinion if you need a certified arborist.. or a monkey with a chainsaw and insurance ....
