16-20 Cardinals… How many do you see?

Hey! This is my first time posting in the bird section. Anyway,
I thought I would share a couple pictures I took a couple months ago when the
weather was colder here in the Midwest. I see at least 16 cardinals but I think
there are closer to 20 (the ones that aren’t bright red are harder to see).

I’m a beginner when it comes to this stuff. Probably a little over a year ago (or longer) I
found myself in Walmart, stopped, and looking at bird seed. Not only did I find
it odd that I was looking at bird seed, but it was confirmation I was getting
old HAHAHA… Furthermore, I bought the seed. I placed seeds on my back deck rail
and would watch the birds in the morning as I drank my coffee. After about a
week I found myself getting more and more birds. Then I started feeding them at
lunch time. Before long, I told my husband it was time to buy a bird feeder. I
bought the cheap ones but they have held up.

Long story short, I started with a bag of seed, which lead
to one bird feeder, which eventually lead to several feeders. I don’t use them
all during the summer months. I’m also starting to look for higher quality
feeders. I bought my first droll yankee feeder the other day at Walmart (finch
feeder). I was so excited too. I was at Lowes first but didn’t see any finch
feeders I liked. Plus, they were all made in China. So I checked out Walmart
and was happy to find an American made feeder. I started seeing the yellow
finches within about 3 days of putting the feeder out there.

I shop at multiple stores. Pay day is every other Friday so I that is when I go to Wal-Mart or Smith's (Kroger owned). Every 2 weeks we also get coffee beans at the little mom and pop shop. We go to Sprouts every 2 weeks as their ads overlap on Wednesdays. This is actually getting less frequent as they have not put the bulk things on sale that I want the most as frequently (steel cut oats and short grain brown rice). The bread outlet is a once a month trip. Other stores such as Keller's (for meat), Trader Joe's, the international markets, Vitamin Cottage (for other bulk items), I alternate months. Some things I get through Amazon's subscribe and save and that can vary in frequency. Eggs are mostly from my hens and many of our vegetables come from our garden. Some of the variety in shopping is about the money savings but it is more along the lines of trying to match the quality to a certain price point and meeting my needs of acquiring a diversity of ingredients. Arborio rice at TJ's, quality meat at Keller's, red lentils in bulk at Vitamin Cottage, etc. Part of it is me trying to maintain a well stocked pantry because my moods are fickle and if the pantry has a variety of things, I can cook according to my mood. Pre-planned menus never, ever work for me.

mcassel, I think part of the info you're missing is this: The MR in MR16 stands for Mirror Reflector. The AR in PAR stands for Aluminized Reflector. Highly polished mirror reflectors are able to direct light in a very focussed, controlled way, so the light the bulb produces can be directed to in a very specific direction (yielding a high candlepower in that direction but throwing little light off to the sides. This effect is increased with low-voltage bulbs because the filaments are smaller. However, the tightly controlled beams that are native to these bulbs can then be softened and adjusted with optional diffusing lenses that dim4fun mentioned. Aluminized reflectors are much less polished and tend to scatter the light, so less of the light is concentrated in the middle of the beamspread, and more is sent off to the sides. If you want dramatic, spotlight-like effects then the MR bulbs are the way to go. If you want softer-edged light, or if you're trying for even lighting, where the pools of light from adjacent fixtures can blend together somewhat seamlessly, then PAR lamps are probably the better choice. If you want soft light but need especially small or versatile fixtures then MR-types with diffusing lenses might be the solution.

OT - Too many cleaning products - How many do you have?

I won't even begin to list how many cleaning products are in my house. It's. Absolutely. Terrifying. That being said, I'm working on getting rid of much of it and using more natural/earth friendly methods. One thing that I am having a tough time giving up is my toilet bowl cleaner with bleach. I just haven't found anything that makes me feel like the toilet is as clean as when I use some bleach based product. Just mixed up a batch of baking soda, essential oils (eucalyptus and peppermint), a little bit of Dawn dishwashing liquid, and enough water to make a paste. This was used to scrub the tub which gets absolutely horrible because it's an old porcelain tub (but the finish was messed up from the previous owners)...it got it as clean as the harsher cleansers I've used with about the same amount of effort. Bonus is that it smelled lovely, way better than most cleaning products you can buy in the store. Looking forward to hearing more about some of the alternate cleaning products that people use.
