Received my 3 'Bishop's Castle' own-roots from David Austin Roses today. They should have warned me that I would need to dig holes at least 4-5 feet wide and 18 inches deep to plant these, the roots are so long! Not that I'm complaining, I just wish I had prepared the holes that size before they arrived. After all, they do arrive, well, bare-root (in a plastic bag with no packing) and need to go into the ground immediately! I had no time to take a photo, just scrambling in the dark digging big holes to plant them. The neighbors must have thought I was burying bodies, the holes had to be so big.

As long as the bag is not opened they can stay in there safely for a few days if stored in a cool and dark place or even in the fridge. One can also 'heel' the bareroots which means just put them on the side in a shady spot, cover the roots with dirt and water. They can be left like this for some time depending on the weather as long as the roots are kept damp. They can also be put in a bucket of water and stay there for a day or so. So next time you'll know there's no need to dig holes in the dark! With regards to the size of holes required, no bareroot has ever been hurt by pruning the roots a bit before planting. Enjoy your new Austins!

I agree with Nik, especially about the root trimming.... also I've planted bare root roses in no more than 6 inches depth, if that... I just squashed the roots down... sounds drastic but sometimes you have to do these things... no ill effects noted...quite the opposite in fact....

..I think we all have the same concerns about neighbours... happy rose gardening...

I just picked up my DA order Friday from Tyler - the roses are now soaking. I happened to notice my Lady Emma Hamilton and she looked like a small shrub with lots of canes. Do you see a difference between the two roses? If so, please describe and I will try to make a guess. I didnt get Tess, but my Lady Emma reminded me of a very branchy floribunda or polyantha [with bigger canes] that will have lots of fullness when it leafs out. I got a Leander - big huge fat canes, no twiggy growth. If I had those 2 unlabeled - it would be easy to tell. Of course when they bloom you will know for sure! Judith

The roses I got this year from DA website were grafted - Huntington rose and Rose de Rescht - they were huge and in great shape! I only saw bare roots on the website. Hope this helps. Liz

Nik, I know that Americans farther South than my zone 6a do plant in the Fall but I have had no personal experience with warmer zones. However, from my zone North (and that's a lot of territory), Fall planting is not a viable option. In August it is too hot to plant, getting in the high 80s and then the first frosts come about the first or second week in October. Four to five weeks is not enough time for the roses to get established and prepare for the hard frosts soon to come. Our last frost date is May 15, so that is about 7 months. Usually we have snow cover then it melts, then more snow cover and on and on through the winter. This is especially bad because repeated freezing and thawing cycles heave plants out of the ground. A constant snow cover, which we do not have, would prevent that and in addition would be protective insulation, keeping the plants near 32 F instead of the -10F air temperatures normal for this zone. It may be difficult for most Europeans to sense the degree and duration of cold that we experience, Scandinavian countries and Scotland excepted. When I read English gardening books that say a plant is cold hardy, I have to remember they mean that it will survive in a zone much warmer than mine. Most of England is zone 8! Compare the Hardiness Zone maps on Garden Web of Europe versus The United States. The color of the zones give a more intuitive feel for the difference in climate. Cath

Ann your garden is lovely in every way. I love love your iceberg roses and the lavender. I can’t grow lavender here because of our dense clay but I really love it. Iceberg is one of my favorite white roses also, I grow a couple ven tho they require spraying here because they are so lovely and bright white. Your princess Anne seems to be very happy and I also hope it becomes a star in your garden. Would you be willing to share more pictures of your Bolero? That is a rose I have been meaning to try and have never gotten the opportunity. The thrips really damage my light colored roses here, but they are still my favorite. The magenta rose in the background of Princess Anne is Super Excelsa rambling rose, I got it from Heirloom roses. I grow it with Super Dorothy over a small fence to hide a car trailer my hubby has there. They are both supposed to rebloom, but after 3 years they only give some sporadic blossoms here and there after the main flush. I would consider them once bloomers unless they change with maturity. On this bottom picture you can see the super Dorothy is lighter. This year they both bloomed darker for some reason if you have space for a climber in this color range I would recommend my Raspberry cream twirl. I feel pushing it lol but it really has been great here. You probably have seen my big ones on the arbor, but this one is a band from this year and already blooming. It makes long thornless stems that work great for arrangements. Picture from my mature plant that shows the color out of the sun. Some blooms have a lot of white like these while others are almost all magenta/red and they age with a lavender cast like princess Anne.

forest, I had to smile at your comment about burying bodies. I don't know in what zone you garden in (you can add that information by editing your profile and making it part of your name), but just want to say that I think you'll be very happy with this rose. Even in my less than wonderful climate and soil, it's a lovely rose and one of my favorites. Very fragrant also, by the way.

Nik and Marlorena - if roses can stand shipping across the country bare root, days in the dark, with no air circulation, or spending weeks in a body bag, then soaked for hours, then planted in a totally different soil than they grew up in, and still survive to grow and bloom, they've got to be tough! Then again, the bare root roses that I bought from another company last year, arrived leafed out and yellow, and died after planting. So I wanted to be extra careful this year. That, and I was so enthusiastic when I received them, that they just HAD to be planted, never getting home late! Thanks for the points and reassurance.

Ingrid - I added to my name. I didn't notice that the transition of Gardenweb to Houzz, changed my name to my Houzz name instead of my Gardenweb name, which had my zone info. I'm so looking forward to Bishop's Castle. I've read such good things about it on this web site. I need plants that can take the intense sun and heat here, and I like the ones with good fragrance (usually not sun/heat tolerant) and flowers that nod a bit.
