Only Full Bathroom, Remodel to Walk In shower only?
Comments (2)I am currently doing this to our guest bathroom. the way I look at is that you live in the house and should be designed to make you happy. Mine has a crappy little tub that is only used by guest to stand in when they shower, typically my mom and mother in law in their 70s. I am ripping it all out and putting in a travertine shower with a glass wall and walk in door with hand rails to make it easy on the gals. No more stepping over a tub and fumbling with a cheesy shower curtain. I am putting in a fold up teak shower seat and a hand wand shower head for them as well but could easily be used by adult in the future to wash an infant. I think if you do a well thought out layout with quality materials the majority of people will like that more than a less than interesting bathroom with a little tub in it. You could also add a nice hot tub outside in the future. The vast majority of people in the USA prefer showers and many NEVER take baths. Folks told me not to take my 5th bedroom and connect to my wife's master closet to make her the ultimate chick room because 5 bedrooms are hard to find in my area. Let me tell you, the good will that gigantic closet with built-ins generates from my wife to me every morning she goes in there is priceless....See MorePlease critique my only full bath design
Comments (21)If you can make a measured drawing of the floor plan, that would be a great help. Especially where the door is located on the wall, the distance from the door framing to the two respective corners. In my drawing above (the photoshopped version of your original drawing) having the toilet opposite the vanity will give you an additional 11" of knee room over what you have now. That's based on the premise that your tub is 32" wide and the typical vanity is about 21" deep. 60" of counter space is about the minimum for a two-bowl vanity. Without moving your door, if the door swing does interfere with the vanity and the vanity was shortened for door swing, you should still be able to fit a 5' long vanity even with the swing of a 3-0 bathroom door since the room is 8' deep. How big (wide) is your current door? Two bowls in a 60" vanity can be done, but it can also look cramped. Instead of cramming two bowls into a small vanity top, I'll sometimes recommend a wider trough sink with two faucets, one faucet on each back corner of the trough. That way two users can wash faces, brush teeth, etc, while still having their own faucet and for the most part, their own sink space, even though it is a shared sink. And don't forget, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a single bowl even when you can fit two. Or three. My wife had carte blanche with our master bathroom. And she absolutely insisted on one sink. There are ways to incorporate wall switches to the left or right of the bathroom door. The swing of the entry door could be reversed if needed. But again, an accurate measured drawing will help so we can see if a tub can fit there. There's always the idea of the tub with a slight stem wall. Again, I'm crossing to many bridges....See MoreTiny Full Bath Remodel Complete- Pictures.
Comments (11)Thanks everyonefor the kind words. We did use a contractor. He did the work and we bought everything other than the lumber/ hardware supplies and we also paid the tile guy. We were on budget of around 8k and spent about $11k. I went over on the tile among other thing like the shower fixtures. We somehow over ordered on the tile as I have a good amount left over. Lesson learned. The tile is porcelain made by View- It is Shore Varadero. It was about 2x as expensive as porcelain at Lowes. I second guessed myself for weeks when I saw the cost. We ordered from Best Tile. The accent tile is from Mosaic source and is Sumi-e. I can look up the color if anyone wants it....See MoreTub or shower for only full bath for when we get old?
Comments (9)I know that there's the shift to showers as people age, but many, many people, especially those who are accustomed to baths, continue to take them well intp old age, if they are able to. As jewelisfabulous mentioned, as we age soaking in nice warm tub can be so soothing to sore muscles. I'm struggling now with picking a tub, and I would certainly suggest getting one of the shorter models - stepping over 19, 20, or more inches can be a challenge for many people, even younger ones, but a standard 14 inch tub should be doable for along time. My dad lived with us for 3 years, and passed away when he was 90, taking only baths, never showers, to the end. The only accommodation we made was a bar which attached to the side of the tub....See Morepaninky
