Only Full Bathroom, Remodel to Walk In shower only?

We live in a 1400 square foot ranch (just me and my husband), we are remodeling our only full bathroom and want to take out the tub and do a nice walk in shower. Will that effect our resale, if we ever decided to move? Has anyone every done this?

I am currently doing this to our guest bathroom. the way I look at is that you live in the house and should be designed to make you happy. Mine has a crappy little tub that is only used by guest to stand in when they shower, typically my mom and mother in law in their 70s. I am ripping it all out and putting in a travertine shower with a glass wall and walk in door with hand rails to make it easy on the gals. No more stepping over a tub and fumbling with a cheesy shower curtain. I am putting in a fold up teak shower seat and a hand wand shower head for them as well but could easily be used by adult in the future to wash an infant.

I think if you do a well thought out layout with quality materials the majority of people will like that more than a less than interesting bathroom with a little tub in it. You could also add a nice hot tub outside in the future. The vast majority of people in the USA prefer showers and many NEVER take baths. Folks told me not to take my 5th bedroom and connect to my wife's master closet to make her the ultimate chick room because 5 bedrooms are hard to find in my area. Let me tell you, the good will that gigantic closet with built-ins generates from my wife to me every morning she goes in there is priceless.

Great comments! Thank you for helping me to think about this out loud ;-). We live in northern California, one hour south of San Francisco, and a half hour from the beach in Santa Cruz. The area is pretty pricey and most single-story houses are being converted into second story houses, some of them good, some of them not so good, AKA monster homes :-(. We are baby boomers and like the size of our house, our garden, etc., and the fact that it is a one story. It's perfectly fine for the two of us. I took care of my Dad before he passed and he was in a walker. I like the idea of having a higher ADA toilet, grab bars, small corner bench, separate hand shower, fixed shower head, and low curb for the shower. And, we are not without our own aches and pains in the joints and lower back! jkom51: thanks for the tip on looking at cultured marble/cultured granite. I am liking the looks of carrera marble a lot, but I'm not sure if it will be too slippery and hard to clean. I don't think I can steal room from the two adjacent bedrooms because they are very small and I wouldn't want to lose a closet in one of the rooms. I guess this is another reason for one, nice, big shower because it opens up the little bathroom. I am seeing the frameless shower door in there.

How many bathtubs vs shower only bathrooms are ideal in a home?

As a parent with young kids I like having the hall bath have the only tub so even when guest are staying I can still bathe my kids. So for resale a young family will not mind not having a tub/ shower combo in master suites, and will probably prefer a walk in shower only to that set up but having a family bath tub would most likely be more convenient. I have a master with a walk in only shower, a guest/powder room with a very small, 3x3 walk in shower and a kids/ hall bath with a tub/shower combo so I may be biased.

I agree that you shouldn't worry about resale (unless you're thinking of selling within the next 5 years), but I still think you should have a tub.......you never know when you're going to want to soak something. I never take a bath (always a shower), except those rare times when I need an epsom salt soak for overworked muscles....and then I really appreciate it. (And depending on whether you have a washtub or yard, or not, you might also need it for hosing down and washing large things (like a dog).)

We just lived through this. We're actually putting a new bathroom in the basement but couldn't finish that one first for reasons (otherwise it would have been ideal) so our contractor put a toilet down there and we used that (no door or sink or anything!) until the main floor bathroom was done. My husband showered at the gym and I showered at our neighbors' house. We're very good friends with our neighbors, but it still felt super awkward showering over there! Fortunately part of the construction work happened to coincide with a small vacation we took, and while we were away we decided to stay two more days when we thought about all the dust and construction chaos happening at home. Really really really glad it happened to work out that way, it would have been a nightmare! My husband works from home and I'm a stay at home mom, so we're home all the time and I think we would have lost our minds during demolition, the water being turned off, etc.
