Do it now. There is a full moon. I just replanted a bunch of seedlings last nite into larger containers and left them to get the full benefit of the full moon. If you have the room, start a compost pile. When I go to Menards I usually stop by the 25%off torn bags section and buy one or two bags of manure or potting soil. I mix this in with the finished compost bin or in the fall in the bin that is cooking. Mix it well and after adding a small amount of clean sand, I use it for containers. You can use a wheelbarrow or a tarp on the ground and mix what you have with regular dirt from an area of the yard and make a mix that should be ok. If you are container gardening you will be adding some nutrients later anyway.

Hi Jess, Just let it dry out before you water again. If the plant starts to turn black you have rot. Make sure it's getting adequate light, this plant is pretty easy if allowed to dry out somewhat and given some sun. Only repot if the roots are coming out of the bottom-this will stress it out more. I always bought Miracle grow potting soil, or so i thought. I had hubby pick up some for my contaainer tmatos this year and noticed it said potting mix. I didnt say anything and used it anyway. Now im not sure if its what ive been using all along for my annuals or not. So far it seems to be good though. I would definitely NOT use the cheap bags of real soil though. He brought some of that home 3 or 4 years ago and it was awful. Also, make sure it doesnt say GARDEN MIX. He also came home with that once and i didnt realize what it was until almost all my annuals were potted and then had to re-do them all. Sugi - In restrospect, I would have gone one pot size up. At the store, the pots looked so big that I didn't want them to start taking over the living room. They also looked like the same size as the existing pots, but ending up being just barely smaller which caused all my troubles. As for cutting in half/whacking them, I've gone with Al's advice to wait and see how they grow. Repotting was just the first step to improving their health! Hopefully I'll be able to control their growth a bit, while still keeping them both very healthy. The Schefflera is doing great with lots of new growth. The tree is growing now in three places: the left side straight up, the top (very small near the ceiling), and the right (obscured). I'm pretty happy about that! The Dracena... not so much. I kind of suspected it because the tree wasn't doing the best even before root pruning. It is in a very slow decline since repotting - the upper leaves have drooped a bit, while the lower leaves have just begun yellowing the other day. I'm really hoping the tree can balance its canopy to roots quickly. Here are photos of each that I just took (to compare with the original photos in the OP):
