'Bantel's Sensation'
Comments (150)Stush, you've got damned near enough to go into business selling them! ;-) I also appreciate how you label your images....very helpful as a species / cultivar reminder. Helps to keep 'em all straight. Greg, this has been an awesome Thread...multiple Threads actually. After the 150th post, we might have to start up another to keep the grow goin'. Karen, I'm glad to hear that the 'Bantel's' are outside in the shade...that's how I do mine as well. Doesn't seem to mind the extreme heat, as long as the sun doesn't scorch the leaves. Really tough plants, given the size of the pot that I'm using. Josh...See MoreI'm back w/ my suspected Bantel's Sensation
Comments (13)Exactly, Stush. I was looking for that plant picture I posted here several months ago of a Futura that had sprouted a stolon/rhizome within the center of the plant. I believe this is what Pirate Girl has. The Hahnii 'Crest' is not Loop's Pride although 'Crest' may have mutated from 'Loop's Pride'. 'Crest has a narrow, very heavily keeled leaf that might be considered brittle. Crest is quite the leafy Hahnii and its leaves appear to all begin at a single central point. Like Loops Pride, the leaves are very dark green and are folded into the shape of a 'V'... at least a "U". This Hahnii is not crested in the botanical sense. Did I not send you one? I can post some pictures of it here if any want to see it. Silver Queen is a BEAUTIFUL trifasciata, I think, as long as the leaves are young. However (darn these howevers!) it behaves just like Moonshine. When the leaves mature, they become a granny apple green with some gray banding. I meant to show the attached picture of a beautiful young 'Silver Queen' earlier, but will post it here now next to a trifasciata 'Compacta' for comparison. You asked how do they grow such nice full pots of plants for under $10. They are grown by the 10s of thousands in places like Costa Rica where labor is cheap and climate is perfect. They sock the water and fertilizer to them and the plants respond....See MoreS. 'Bantel's Sensation' not doing so hot
Comments (10)Wow, thanks for this great advice and trouble-shooting. I killed a really cool agave last year and I am feeling dumb about potentially killing another cool plant, so I appreciate the help! Correct, the plastic pot is how it came to me and the terra cotta pot is the current planting. The middle planting before terra cotta was a really tall glazed ceramic pot, which looked awesome but it was all the wrong dimensions and materials of course! For the first transplant, it wasn't rooted all the way to the bottom of the plastic pot yet but had more roots than currently, and had some pups that died off when it was in that big pot. Now it seems like it is rooting somewhat, as when it was first in the new pot it wanted to fall over and now it is decently firm in there. I dug down and the base of the plant doesn't look rotten. I transplanted it about a month ago. Maybe that was the last of the rotting issue and it's leveling out. Can I use pumice instead of perlite if I have it on hand? If perlite is better I can definitely go get some. It is in what they called a cactus mix but could use more drainage as it is fairly moist down into the soil. It has been cool and humid (relatively for southern CA) so there has been less evaporation. Since it doesn't have many roots currently, I think I will try digging the perlite into the current pot rather than completely transplanting, to lessen the disturbance and shock on the plant. It's currently under a UV-filtering shade--I was hoping the bright filtered light would help. Ok, that's enough rambling for the moment, thanks again!...See MoreBantel's Sensation - update :-)
Comments (37)It is nice to see this revisited and updated, greenman28. I remember reading about Bantel's and your thread here, before I even got one. I was not looking for one, it just happened that there was one in a neglected mixed pot of Sans that I got . Has this plant ever been finicky. It's been 2, near three years, and just now putting out leaves and finally, a pup. This plant looks shorter than many of the photos of BS that I see, though. It does seem to like a little more moisture than some of the others. I think I'm working out some of the 'keys' to keeping it happy. The weed growing in there was once a big green afro. That's when the BS plant looked the happiest. I pulled a bunch out and let the rest dry. Now it is coming back. If it did not seed so successfully, I'd leave it alone....See MoreStush2049 Pitts.
