It's been about 4 yrs or so since I was last on this website and it has really changed! Thank goodness there is still this forum as the advice and knowledge on here is immeasurable! I still see a lot of familiar folks on here ( you wont remember me because as a rose newbie all i did was read and learn aka lurk lol) anyway, I just want to take a minute to say thank you ALL for all that you do! It really does make a difference and impact!!

Hello Jackie! Thank you! I am in the process of restarting my garden and growing roses at my new house so I don't have any pics yet. I currently have Comte de Chambord, ; and an order put in with ARE for : Lady Hillingdon and Mrs. B. R. Cant ( which I grew at my old house and absolutely loved! I knew I couldn't live without these 2 ladies); also Maman Cochet, Celine Forestier, Souvenir de Madame Leonie Viennot, American Pillar, Star of the Republic, and Madame Ernest Calvat. These will all be new to try this year. My favs are probably the Teas, noisettes, bourbons, and all of the Austin roses :) Altho, I imagine it will take me quite some time to get my collection back up to once it once was :)

Your set up looks great I am using shade cloth as I am also growing outdoors in Queensland Australia which has a sub tropical climate which is about 32c now with humidity. I must do something like yours. At present I am growing outside along two walls of my house which throws off ambient heat which I try to control by using shade cloth. The attached photo is my own improvised ebb and flow which I have been using successfully for years with tomatoes. The other side of my house has my Kratky floating raft with lettuce and several DWC containers with asian vegetables , and silver beet. In the far distance is my vertical system which I retrieved from under my house that I have not used for years, which I have also improvised in conjunction with my ebb and flow to flow back to the reservoir.Nothing growing at present but Bok Choy etc do very well except growing with tomatoes is the incorrect nutrient strength so maybe next crop I will figure something out.

It goes centered under the fan across from the kitchen, I would HIGHLY recommend replacing the fan with a chandelier much better and will delineate the room. There are fans everywhere so I assume you live in a place you need the airflow, otherwise, I would say replace both of them.

I would like to suggest that you move in and see how the space works for you. I personally wouldn’t paint over the cabinets. The arch is more of a dated look and I wouldn’t invest in keeping that. I might even prefer if you remove them and do open shelving until you have the budget to replace the uppers. The lowers (don’t have the arch) look fine. I’d be looking to save up to do a full remodel. Even it’s it’s ten years down the line... for now I’d paint and replace the lighting fixtures.

Sometimes it's great to be able to start over again because you're aware of some of the pitfalls and have a better idea of which roses you really like and what grows best for you. We'll look forward to seeing your garden when you're settled in and the roses are growing and blooming.

You sure are right about that Ingrid. I learned so much from my first garden experiences and all the great advice here on GW. This time I will plan on leaving a LOT more space between plants, so I am not having to dig up and move roses lol That is quite a job!!! Fortunately I'm in the same planting zone so that is good, plus there's a lot more space to work with. I look forward sharing photos with everyone here and seeing everyone's photos as well!

Hello ealoudermilk1! Good luck with your new garden. I'm familiar with most of your roses and all the ones I know I love. Are you aware that 'Souv. de Mme. Leonie Viennot' will try to eat whatever structure you put it on? My plant is grafted, was planted in really bad soil (think white concrete), and took several years to get going. Now she has overwhelmed her 8' tall by 5' wide (pentagonal floor plan) pergola and is casting languishing glances at the black locust nearby. I don't dare let her climb it, as the locust is quite likely approaching the end of its life and overhangs a power line. Anyway, I think you will be wise to allow the Madame a generous amount of space.

Those sound like great choices. I am also starting over. I will have my dream of having two Mrs BR Cants, one on each side of the driveway. I've been through a lot with most of my yard being dug up, but I'm going to make it worth it.

Oh, nice choices! I'm new here, and still climbing the learning curve with roses, and also have Lady H, the Comte, and Mme Leonie Viennot, among others. Leonie is in a pot for now, while I try to work out whether 'vigourous' means the same thing here in the not so sunny UK as it does elsewhere! I'm a trifle unnerved by Melissa's warning, I thought she might be happy to eat the shed, but now I'm wondering if she mightn't prefer more space to conquer. Time will tell I suppose!

Hi Melissa, thank you for the warning on Souv. de Mme. Leonie Viennot. I didn't realize that she got that size, I better make sure I leave her plenty of room then! I have a trellis about 20 foot up on the second story. Would be nice if she would reach up there, but that might be stretching it a bit. I bet she is a knockout on your pergola! That sounds beautiful!!

Thanks Buford, us rose lovers have to keep on persevering no matter what life and nature throws our way!! 2 Mrs. B R Can't's on either side of the driveway sounds lovely! I planted her under my teenage daughters bedroom window. Just a little extra insurance hahaha!
