Console legs for wall-mount sink?

We have installed this sink in our bathroom:

The contractor put blocking in the wall and it's very secure. But it still makes me a bit nervous with two rambunctious 7-year-olds sharing the bathroom with us. I'd like to add console legs. From everything I've read, Palmer Industries is the way to go. But the one we'd need is $1700. This one looks basically the same and is solid brass too, for $500:

Am I missing something here about why the Signature Hardware one could be a problem? Does anyone have experience with either company? Or other console leg options?

The Duravit comes with a pedestal for $127. Is there a reason you don't want that one?

Thank you, homepro01. I really don't like the look of those pedestals. Our house is circa 1938 and while we didn't go for totally period, we wanted it to be somewhat period-appropriate. A lot of these Deco-era houses had a wall-hung sink, and some also had the console legs. It's also the only bathroom for our family of four, and it's on the narrow side, so the floor space is nice. Obviously the console legs will interrupt that but not as much as those extra bulky Duravit pedestals, which also give the sink a more contemporary look.

budge1, the taps are pretty, aren't they? Fortunately the taps weren't TOO expensive....what is really killing me is the stupid shower/bath faucet sets. Not only am I totally baffled by all the pressure balance blah blah blah options...but they are all so friggen expensive! vondab--I got lucky and found a salvage sink that was already in pretty good condition. I know what you mean, though, I saw plenty of sinks that would have been very nice if it hadn't been for all the rust. I think my sink is porcelain...a lot of the salvage sinks are cast iron, which I believe can be resurfaced more or less successfully. I really have no experience with that process, though, so I can't offer any words of wisdom. I did, however, buy a product that was recommended on the deabath.com website, called 'Zud'. It was quite effective in removing a minor rust colored area on the sink (not visible in the pictures I posted above) as well as some rust stains on my tile floor. Might be worth a try.... Wouldn't surprise me if NYC had its own aesthetic, given the space constraints. ;-) I'm actually surprised that the banjo style is out of style these days - it looks really nice *and* it's practical! What could be better? (other than the price) Actually, in terms of practicality, my mom brought up a point. Depending how much space you have between the shelf and the toilet tank, it could be hard to get to the inside of the tank for repairs. She said she's seen bathrooms in this style where the shelf was not attached to the sink console, but was either on hinges or brackets so it could be swung out of the way or removed altogether. She said when the shelf was in normal place, it looked like it was part of the sink. Sounds like an interesting way to do it... Thanks for the suggestion of looking on Ebay, sweeby! I'm headed there next...

thank you! I've already probably-picked out a faucet (Cifial Highlands, which more or less matches my kitchen faucet) but I was hoping to see inspiration pix. I have not found a single picture of a wall mounted faucet with anything besides a traditional vanity (don't want that) or super modern vessel sink (don't want that either). Is there some design rule against console sinks with wall mount faucets?

A cast iron sink correctly bolted to framing will stay put with few problems. Many public restrooms still use this type of installation. Lag screws can eventually come loose. Through bolting with large washers against the wood will hold up fine. I usually mount the 2x in the wall, lay the sink plate against it and drill matching holes. The bolts are then put through large washers (or even square of scrap steel about 2x2 inches), then a nut is attached to hold them in position. The bolts stick through the drywall (or cement board and tile) far enough to put nylon self locking bolts to hold the sink to the wall (or the bracket that the sink then attaches to). A couple of 3/8 bolts will hold just about anything you can dish out.

Understood. Don't know much about the options you posted. I would be wary of a cheap option because the legs will get banged into often and I would not want something that would show dents easily. The pedestal that came with the Duravit Scola is very solid but it is too contemporary and will not fit with your sink.

Can you order a sample of the material from Palmer industries to see what you are getting?

Palmer sells through showrooms, as well as through direct sales. A showroom near me carries their consoles and has one on view. You may want to see if one of the showrooms near you has one on display. A look at theirs may tell you something that helps you to decide.
