Vanity from CabinetDIY - FYI

Just an FYI: we started to build the vanity from a website called CabinetDIY, and it's not gone smoothly at all. The pictorial, one-page instructions weren't clear. The back piece of the vanity was actually three pieces, stapled together. I ordered a finished side-panel, but we have to cut it to fit and aren't sure how to attach it to the side...glue?

Also, my DH was especially annoyed that there is exposed plywood on the bottom of the cabinet, he's concerned about that for use in the bathroom, where the floor will likely be wet many times. We were thinking of putting RedGuard on the bottom to protect it, and maybe we should even use clear caulking around the base!

We ordered this vanity almost a year ago, and briefly inspected to see if it was okay. We missed the stapled back piece, and the minimal assembly instructions. It will be okay when it's finished, but probably won't order from this site again.

I'm curious, what is the vanity size and how much did you pay?

I looked at RTA cabinets for my bathroom but by the time I paid the shipping costs the savings weren't that great or worth it IMO. I ended up going local and my vanity came assembled.

Good luck. & post some pics when you're done. It may turn out looking great.. :)

The size is 36", and I want to say that it was a bit under $500.

We did do some local shopping for a vanity, but I wasn't a fan of the styles available and I didn't search extensively.

I mainly posted about the terrible quality and instructions from CabinetDIY because I couldn't find any online reviews that indicated these issues -- in fact all the reviews I could find were about how amazing the products are and how great they look.

What arrived wasn't even the vanity design described on the website. I went back to read about it just now, and it was supposed to be 2-drawers/2 cabinet doors with full overlay. In actuality, it has 3 drawers and the doors/drawers are partial overlay.

pps7-- Thanks for the great pix. I ordered a sample of the Catarina tile. And many thanks to the person who posted the American Olean website link for the tile. That was so helpful. I thought it would be simple to find a Carrera Marble look alike tile but it has been an ordeal! Guess I was looking in the wrong tile stores (about 7 total, with one find that turned out to be discontinued!) **On another note: Where did you get your beautiful medicine cabinet? Is it wood, and do you like the quality? I found one at Pottery Barn online (Hotel is the brand) but can't look at it in person, so would have to buy first. I also saw one at Restoration Hardware but the quality didn't seem top rate. Thanks for any help.**

I love the look of a well done tower. I see no reason for multiple heights in vanity below. You have 108 inches in niche to play with........ Left to right, if you want the effect of your third picture: 3' "post", 30 inch door base, 3.0 post, 36 inch 3 drawer base, 3"inch "post", 30 inch sink base 3.0 post. is 108 inches. Tower above in middle 36 wide, 12 inches deep max with two doors, , and whatever inches high to ceiling. No raised counter, no lowered counter : ) Easy to work with three inch increments for all and stay with three drawers on the drawer base.. Use bins and divvy up the space. Note: Build a "base' for tower, use a 6 inch splash, and WRAP that tower base in same surface as counter top. The higher splash is more elegant, and it will keep wood OFF the counter surface. Yes you are fine on the 36 inch drawers. Yes, that's the width of a lateral file with a fraction of the weight inside : ) it's fine. Door bases are a black hole of junk behind, and I like the "weight": at the middle. As to "wrapping " that tower base.......here's what I mean. Not for your style just for tower base. With a six inch splash, pic below That arrangement will give you 36" wide spaces for mirrors/ frame included over each sink by whatever height you want. ,

Glaze has no place to hang up on a slab door. Most manufacturers won’t do slab or shaker doors with glazing for that reason. Glaze is supposed to hang up in the details, and you need a door with some of those details to make it show. A floating vanity that’s mounted at only 6” off the floor is doable, but it’s more difficult to clean under than one mounted the more traditional 15” off the floor. The traditional height of floating vanities is 18”H and 21” H. Have you lived with a vessel sink before? They are gorgeous! But they have more water on the counter and more water running off of the counter than an undermount sink. They’re more work to clean and maintain than an undermount. I just want to make sure you have considered all of that extra work before the decision finalization. :-)

We used them for a kitchen in a rental house. Had no issues. They have held up very well over the last five years. A lot of your concerns appear to be from unfamiliarity with RTA cabinetry. The dealers of RTA cabinets go on the assumption that the buyer is familiar with basic construction and finishing/installation techniques or will be using a contractor.

You're right, the other times we have assembled cabinets they were from ikea this was the first experience with another brand.

We figured all of it out, but some of the pilot holes were in the wrong place and had to be adjusted. The back to the unit is not even one piece, it's three that are stapled together.

Anyway, I'm not targeting all rta cabinets, just my experience with CabinetDIY

I'm glad you've figured it out. Hopefully you'll love the look when it's all done and these issues will just become minor inconveniences. We just did a couple of Ikea cabinets for a temporary solution until we can do a full remodel. DH was impressed with the build and ease of assembly. They (Ikea) do make a solid product.
