One of my client's broke her pull out which is a cabinet door attached to a bottom mount pullout. She said she was pushing trash down into it (which I believe, she was probably cramming). She said drinking was not involved, (which I don't really believe). Anyway it can't be fixed without replacing the bottom of the cabinet since the screws split the cabinet floor when they pulled out. I think it is a design flaw, and would recommend a top-mount style.

Here is what I see are things to do. 1. most organics: down the drain or into compost holding bin. Move to the big compost. 2. most hard matter: sort and recycle. Store near the garage. 3. collect the rest in a temporary holding bin, and remove it to another place. By removing garbage, as often as you could imagine, you keep kitchen air drier and cleaner than otherwise. adamrainoff, to follow up on billl's thoughts, perhaps a good part of the solution will be clearer after thinking about ways to get trash out of the kitchen more often. No need to store it. Is this ok? I too was bothered when I found out there was no advanced solution for garbage. The final frontier: garbage management systems. What else can you do with garbage except manage it? in the 100 year forecast from a garbage management systems perspective i see people returning more and more containers, and one incentive could be the dollar they get for each of those containers made for this high value return system. Scavengers would love the dollar return too, and scavenging is a fine activity for many. Consumers could pay $1.10 at purchase and get $1 back at return; the ten cents funds the container management and handling system. -- Spendy high end kitchen cabinet manufacturers also have nothing specifically high end or different for garbage. High end manufacturers of kitchen system HARDWARE offer products in the thousands; none have anything elaborate for garbage. Plastic will do. As far as I know Jbrazmania, no one has managed to figure out a way to use it with inset doors...framed, yes, but inset...not yet anyway! For those interested, the Häfele foot pedals are designed for frameless cabinets. However, our own MeToo2 figured out a way to use them w/framed cabinets. In your picture, the cans sit on a base. I believe that my modifications will also work with your situation (cans sitting on a base). However, you will need to make one minor modification that I did not do. That modification has to do with the elastic cords that come with the pedal. Elastic cords (ie, bungee cords) pull the door open when the pedal is kicked. You would have to alter where the front of the cords are mounted inside the cabinet. Very easy to do. Earlier posts on this thread refer to a version of the Hafele pedal for trash cans which sit on a base. I have not seen this product. nancy_east -- thanks for your nice words! How exciting about your kitchen -- this will be fun to watch develop! The widest walkway we have is 36 1/2" (countertop to countertop), with it going down to 34 1/2" where our apron front sink "jumps" out. From our cooktop to the widest point of the bowed island countertop is 35 3/4". The only times (or rather, areas) our aisles feel tight are when the dishwasher door is open and there's only 12" of clearance (between the open door and the island cabinetry). But so far, no barked shins! We're careful and aware. The other area is our refrigerator (which is 30" wide, all refrigerator so it's a wide door): when it's open the only one who can sidle by (and then it's just barely) is our two year-old. But neither of those conditions are permanent (meaning, the dishwasher is mostly closed and the refrigerator door is mostly closed as well). While 36" for an aisle isn't "ideal," for us it's working out fine. Our only alternative would've been to give up the island and that wasn't an option! We need the storage space. Your aisles will work out fine; if it there's an impediment in the 36" aisle (like a dishwasher), then you all will learn the same careful two-step we and many others have as well!
