Old cat litter buckets with holes drilled in them are free, ventilated, and you can haul the whole lot of them out with the handle. They stack well too. They are also easy to wash out should you have one potato go bad, like I did yesterday. Krylon for plastic can prettify them should you not want guests to see Tidy Cat on the side. They also work for dirty kitchen towel storage, bulk product storage (bulk lentils or rice) craft yarn storage, car wash kit storage, garden hand tool and stool combo, and emegency upset tummy bucket.

I have some $8 woven baskets from target. If you want to get fancy you can add a cloth liner. Baskets provide enough ventilation and the opening in the end makes the basket easy to grab. Baskets look nice stored/placed anywhere.

I go with the Tidy Cat containers with handles. I tried to give away 20 of them on Freecycle and nobody wanted them. So I hung on to them and then when we moved, they were invaluable! (Packing containers with handles)

I do just what you suggested. I have a big deep drawer with three baskets in it. The baskets are loosely woven so ventilation seems fine. I do have some foil in the bottoms of the baskets to keep things clean. One basket has potatoes, one onions, and one garlic and shallots.

I have been keeping mine in a fridge crisper for over 50 years. No negatives. Nothing bad happens to potatoes or anything else. Keeps everything clean, too.

That's fine if your crisper holds 20+ pounds of potatoes along with onions, oranges, etc.

When sweet potatoes go on sale in the fall, I stock up, and store them in the cool basement in a cardboard box filled with packing peanuts -- placed so they are all separated. They will keep this way for 4-5 months.

White potatoes and onions I buy in small lots so they stay in a basket, in a drawer in the kitchen.

I agree on the cat litter buckets (although I don't buy them myself because unfortunately they can't be recycled in my town). I use them for the animals' food, long term storage of pasta/cereal/snack boxes, bird seed, hand tools both indoors and out, potting soil components, and most of all for plants -- my fig is growing in one, the handle makes it easy to move around.
