Dying transmission question

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey that has served me well for a long time. I love it. But on my last visit to the Honda service department (that has always been totally reasonable and fair to me), they told me my transmission was dying, and they don't do rebuilds, and they said I shouldn't sink any more money into it, but drive it 'til it dies.

Okay.........that was 8 months ago, and it's acting pretty much the same. I only drive it about 50-70 miles/week at most. (I'd drive it more for pleasure trips, but I'm afraid of the transmission giving out). I drive it very gingerly. I never force it into a higher gear. There is minimal jerking with shift changes (automatic). I've checked the trans fluid and it's a good level, but a little dirty.

When the Honda guy drove it, I'm sure it ran it like a racer.......which of course makes the problem seem worse.

I realize I need a new car, but what should I do in order to maximize keeping this one running?

It's time for an oil change. Should I tell them just to let me know if anything needs fixed that might kill me otherwise? Should I ask them to change the trans fluid?

I think I'm driving the way I should........avoiding heavy traffic, not pulling out into fast traffic, etc.

Is there anything else I could do to make my transmission last a little longer? The Honda service people told me an additive wouldn't help. I do trust these people, even though they also sell cars.

Any advice?

Thanks!
