bathroom tile FAQ's
Comments (64)I changed the entrance of my shower tub. The panel board was moldy; water was getting in between the top tiles and the panel board. the joint was not well sealed. I put new everything for the entrance, even a membrane between the plywood and the tiles. However, it seems to leak from the wall now. Water is coming out of the wall outside the shower tub. Would it be the grout, tiles...? Tiles and grout are probably 20+ yrs old ( turquoise tiles). I tried to put some ready grout ( in a tube), but it still leaks! Calking is well done. Should I remove the old grout and put new one everywhere? Thanks for your help!...See MoreHow to decorate bathrooms with slate (look-alike) floors?
Comments (13)I did Dal Continental slate floor in the bathroom, with white tiles and a different color slate trim and pencil. I love it. I really like contrasting materials and textures, and the smooth white tiles and the more rustic feel of slate is very appealing for me! Am doing a backsplash as I write in the kitchen which will be white subway and slate border to contrast, too. We live in a more wooded area, so the contrast fits the outdoors as well. I don't have a lot of views of the floor, but here is one you may be able to get the basic look of: Here is a link that might be useful: other pics of bathroom......See MoreTravertine Tile and Bathrooms
Comments (23)Ok I have travertine in both my son's bath (he's 4) and my own. So here's my experience after a year and a half. I color my hair (ok you have to in alaska...the darkness fades it if you aren't black haired) and I color it red :oP (that is my real color) Ok i'm talking about that too much LOL Anyhoo, I'm not a tidy colorer and I shower to rinse it out. I have travertine in the room and have slopped color on the floor. It takes a swipe to clean it, and if it leaves a spot, I've once used an alchol pad to swipe over that (I think it was a stridex face cleaner). I have no stains on the travertine on the main floor, nor on the marble counters nor on the travertine shower floor or ceiling. My son's bath is travertine and granite. Not a stain on it and he's not a tidy child :) Grape cough syrup, benedryl, a very nasty cherry medicine (he's not well) and they all wipe up. No stains at all. Travertine is not uneven, nor should any stone be if you buy gauged tile (the most common if you're not buying 99 cent tile). A tile guy should have no issues but ask if they've done stone. I have no stains on the grout either :) And it's just grout (not epoxy). We don't baby our home...I haven't even resealed though I was thinking maybe it's time since we're moving for the winter, but our travertine looks as fab as the day we put it in and I'd use it again in a new york second :)...See MoreWhich Tile Color for DH's "Manly" Bathroom?
Comments (53)Wow, lots to take in and consider. I guess I've never seen honed black slate, but, I've never looked for it. Since DH works out of carpet and design stores, that's where I look for things of this nature. I did a google search for honed black slate. I like it but it really doesn't look much different than the Dal-tile piece I've chosen. I'm sure the texture is different tho but we like the leathered texture. There isn't as much color variation in this Downtown Black as I initially thought. I think we'll stick with this decision, but thanks for the suggestions. Don't know if it matters, probably not since there seems to be no love for the travertine deco, but what I was wanting isn't tumbled. It's hone and I chose honed because of the field tile choice. Enduring, when I had everything here, I did lay it all out and I've also done the "mood" board on the computer. I thought it looked good but apparently I'm clueless :o I'll go back to the store where I found the deco pieces I liked and put them together with the two full size tiles. One change DH made was to go with 2" inserts (vs 1") in the hone travertine and widening it to 6". I will also ask him if he'd like to consider something else. I realize there isn't a lot of contrast or "pop" with the liners, that was intentional, but it does offer some dimension, a little contrast leading to the cream colored honed travertine with the Venetian bronze tiles mixed in. I really don't care for the idea of using smaller pieces of the Downtown Black as a deco but I do appreciate the suggestions. mongoct, the faucet hardware is brushed nickel. I have mixed (brushed nickel and Venetian bronze) in my (very light) bathroom as well. I've seen that a lot in bathrooms and lots of conversations about it , most agreeing it's fine. The cabinet hardware and door hardware is Venetian bronze. All the doors in the house have Venetian bronze hardware. The kitchen (this bathroom is within view of the kitchen) has Venetian brone fixtures, a beautiful rounded Black Galaxy bar base and the same color (but tumbled) travertine backsplash. I would have preferred to use Venetian bronze fixtures in the bathroom. The decision to go with brushed nickel was one made out of necessity. David has had a dark bronze (can't remember what it was called 33 years ago) fixtures and I know the mess he can (and will) make. Going with brushed nickel AND a Tapmaster has virtually eliminated the soapy, toothpaste-y mess :) Thankfully, there is a lot of black and silver in the granite. oh, mayflowers, the flooring will the the same black tile as the surround. Like I said, I'll see if DH would like to consider something else. I know he doesn't want glass tiles....See Moreontariomom
