How to decorate bathrooms with slate (look-alike) floors?

I am doing a mudroom and adjoining powder room with a slate look-alike (daltile continental slate). I want to do tile 4 feet up the wall. I'm thinking white tile and fixtures would be a nice sharp contrast to the floor. But I'd love to add perhaps an strip of accent tile on the wall. But don't know what color. Anyone have any pictures of bathrooms with slate (or slate look alike) floors? Thanks so much!

I'm placing white wainscoting on my walls above my slate. All I have is the floor so far, so my pictures won't help much. I asked what tile people would use in a shower area when slate is on the floor and the answer I got was a travertine look alike. But travertine wouldn't contrast much with a white, I think, so I guess I'm not much help!

Do you have a sample of the Silestone Lagoon to look at with your tile. I think you are right that it might look slightly off but it's hard to know with out seeing it in person. I also think it might be difficult to find a solid white countertop that will play well with both the white in the tile and your white countertops. Maybe you should concierge a light to medium tone gray countertop. It will provide a little contrast and keep your room from looking too white (unless that is the look you want). I think it would look better not to have too much movement in the countertop since the porcelain carrara tile has lots of movement. I posted a picture earlier in this thread showing the Carrara look alike tile my daughter used in her bathroom. She opted for light gray cabinets and initially wanted a white countertop. She shopped remnants for her countertop and was not able to find something that didn't "look slightly off". She ended up using a black quartz that had some lighter speckles in it. She thought it looked better than a solid color. Perhaps you could find a grey with some flecks of dark grey, black or white in it. I've posted many pics of my daughter's bathroom on this forum but here's a few shots for you so you can see how contrasting colors work Since you probably don't want to go with black, maybe something like Silestones Ocean Jasper Or Moonstone Would work for you. If your not limited to Silestone Cambria has some options that might work too. Snowdown White Greystone Good look with your search for the right countertop.

Maybe it would help to eliminate candidates - from what I see I don't think it is from Floor and Decor, at least not what I used. The veining is much more prominant than what I've seen at Floor and Decor.

Dark (black or dark slate) floor in small bathroom?

Thanks suzan30! We fell in love with it when we saw it (the other colors are stunning as well!), but were also concerned about such dark tile in a small space (hadn't been considering dark tile at first). It is Glow tile (color is Cosmos) from Atlas Concorde (distributed by AKDO?). Ours are the 12x24's, if you can't tell in the pics, but it does come in other sizes as well.

Hi, I just found this thread, I don't know if you've made a decision yet but thought I'd offer my two cents. While building our home my husband and I debated heavily over real slate, he wanted it for the "look" of natural stone and I didn't want it because of the maintenance, and the problems (flaking, staining, and the variations in thickness of the tile, etc...). After a lot of serious consideration we chose to go with the real slate because it fit the style of the house. I have not regretted it. It looks great and after having moved in a year ago has been holding up well. We went with Brazilian multi color slate that I found through a local tile distributor. It was professionally installed and my tile guy used an impregnator to seal it. I believe the impregnator is available at home depot. While shopping for the slate I found a huge price difference between two local distributors for what was essentially the same thing, one offered ungauged and unsealed 16"x16" tiles for around $5.50/sf and the other offered the same size tiles but gauged and sealed for more than double the price. I opted for the ungauged and unsealed knowing my tile guy would apply sealer anyway. The tile turned out to be extremely consistent in thickness, very durable, and was easy to install. We've had no flaking as of yet. I have since learned that Brazilian multi-color slate is a favorite of architects because it is much more even and less prone to breakage than many other types. As far as cleaning, it hides the dirt very well. I've found sweeping with a soft broom the best way to keep it clean. If you are quick to clean up spills with hot water and a little dishwashing liquid it will hold up against staining however it is porous and will tend to absorb spills that are left on it. That is all part of the look and also gives it character with age. It is installed over radiant heat which is quite comfortable. We have about 500 square feet of it on our first floor, I don't find it hard on the feet at all, and I rarely wear shoes in the house. I'm curious to the answers people come up with :) I'm currently looking at a slate lookalike floor with white wainscot and white subways. Then my vanity is a coniac wood color with a white basin and the walls will be a light light greybrown. I think it will look lovely, although I wont have the samples til tomorrow!

Fae, it's our second bathroom and we suffer from serious lapses in motivation. We haven't done anything in a month. I need to send my fiance out for the tile sealer this week and hopefully go tile shopping for the shower. We're well over a year on this project!

oh dear, that strikes fear into my heart! ours is the only bathroom...I'm praying it doesnt take longer than 2 weeks!

I did Dal Continental slate floor in the bathroom, with white tiles and a different color slate trim and pencil. I love it.

I really like contrasting materials and textures, and the smooth white tiles and the more rustic feel of slate is very appealing for me!

Am doing a backsplash as I write in the kitchen which will be white subway and slate border to contrast, too.

We live in a more wooded area, so the contrast fits the outdoors as well.

what shade of the continental slate do you have on the floor? It looks like there isnt too much variation, which makes it what im looking for i think!

also are those the sussex PB lights? I've been seriously seriously considering those...

I have to say I LOVE the Dal CS - I did much research on what to install in this tricky area - tiny mud meets tiny powder high traffic, high use area

This is a porcelain tile & virtually bulletproof! 4 yrs of high use - little maintenance

ah- i know those photos above! Yes, continental slate is awesome. It's mostly green, with texture, not too much color, but some variability.

Mine is the green one.

yes... those are the PB lights. I really like them, just this morning was looking at them, and pleased with the choice. I particularly liked the square shades, the only ones I saw like that.
