Comments (5)That IS pretty significant damage, but I've seen JM's survive with worse :-) The bigger question is, should it survive, what is it going to look like? IMO, this tree will never regain a very appealing aspect and in such a prominent and conspicuous position in your garden, I'd seriously think about replacing it. I might not toss it out altogther but just relocate to less visible place and see how it goes. I'd not recommend cutting it off below the wound. This is essentially the the equivalent of topping the tree. It removes the apical meristem and so the tree will never get significantly taller (not necessarily an issue with such a pendulous selection), can stimulate a lot of weird growth and exposes the tree to even greater disease vulnerability. I've seen this attempted on a variety of JM's and the result is not very pleasing....See MoreSplitting in Norway Maple branches
Comments (0)I know, I know, Norways aren't most people's favorites. They're not my faves either, but I have several mature ones on the property I bought 2 years ago so I have to deal with them. On two separate trees, I have seen 2-3 foot long splits in main or leader branches that just start and end at some random point in the branch. In other words, the branch isn't pulling apart at a crotch or anything like that. And it's all the way through the branch; I can see daylight through these things. Is this normal? Are Norways brittle enough to do this? Does it happen only when they're diseased? (We just cut one down that was diseased so I'm wondering if all of them have picked it up.) Any suggestions for what to look for would be great. Or pointers to web sites on maple care, diseases, etc. I'd love love LOVE to replace the Norways with native maples someday, but if they're diseased I want to know about it so I don't shoot myself in the foot, KWIM? Comments (5)The general rule of thumb on most trees is to prune in late winter and early spring .except for blooming bushes ( and I guess blooming trees also ?) which should be trimmed just after blooming or you'll screw up the bloom for next season I pruned one of mine in July and it was fine...BUT maples are trees that the sap rises in late winter and early spring ...so when you prune during that period it makes some sense it will not be the best time since it may stress them ... But most JM's are very hard to screw up once they get established so if you do it in sap rising time I'm sure it would be ok but only if you have no choice ...you do though...BUT I see no reason NOT to wait til the fall color is over and do it then...the sap won't be anywhere near the spring stage...So if I were you I'd wait and enjoy the color then immidiately do the deed ...David...See MoreSplit Branch, Rose of Sharon, Propigation
Comments (2)If you try to root the whole branch as one plant you will probably fail BUT if take smaller cuttings 2-3 inches long remove all but tip leaf. apply 0.1% IBA (rooting hormone) stick in well drained soil & mist. Use bottom heat rooting time 20-80 days....See More- 9 years ago
