Need advice on watering succulents with new soil

I recently began using soil-less soil, as has been discussed here and on other forums. I have eliminated potting soil, and for all my succulents I use two parts #2 chicken grit (granite) and one part pine bark fines. Here is my question: am I now watering too infrequently? Mostly I notice an issue with my Jade plants- they are under T5 fluorescent grow lights indoors, and since using the new mix the lower leaves on branches are tending to dry up, shrivel, turn grey or even show a silvery, crystalline coating. I have been watching the leaves that still look healthy, and there is no loss of turgor. I am at a loss as to the cause.
