Cold Hardy Raspberry Varieties

Hi.....i'm looking to get some experience on what varieties of Raspberries are surviving these brutal winters, as both the summer bearing and everbearing are both showing a lot of winter damage last spring, this winter was worse.

As far as summer varieties go, gotta cross my fingers and hold my breath...at least the Fall Bearers will at least give you a decent Fall Crop b4 Frost comes.

Any insight on Cold Hardy Summer Bearing Raspberries are welcome

I'm surprised! We got down to -16F here, and I'm not seeing much damage. Blackberries, yes, some, but I protected them and will have a decent harvest this year. I have Cascade Gold, Taylor, Prelude, and Encore and I'm not seeing any damage. Hard to tell right now, They are all still very dormant. the only damage I see is on my Allen black, and only on some laterals. Low tonight is 19F, still waiting for spring to arrive here.

My plants are mature though, and throw numerous canes each spring. I kept all my canes to the everbearing and they look fine too.

My only thought is they are staying wet, or they are not well fed. Otherwise I'm not sure why you are having problems?

In that case, yes, you should try to grow them. I'm trying to grow some wild raspberries from other parts of the world. Some consider invasive, like wineberry, but also natives like thimbleberry. it doesn't grow in my area, well it does now :) At my cottage wild plants is about all i can get to grow. I don't grow those here in the city. The domesticated berries though grown yourself are excellent too. I really love the berries I get each year just about over any other fruit except currants. Blackberries are not bad either!

Hi Offgridnatureman- I havenÂt actually tried planting much during the fall. Not because I'm afraid to... it's just my ambition finally wears out around now, and it doesn't help that all the leaves are falling off everything. I know my local nursery discounts everything by 20% of so in the fall, and I probably wouldn't hesitate to plant a one gallon nursery raspberry, I just havenÂt done it before. Perhaps I should just so when someone asks a question like this, I could have something intelligent to say! As for bare root raspberries, if the nurseries are recommending waiting until spring, that I'd probably just go with that. Have you settled on any varieties yet? Some people here say "just plant Caroline and be done with it". But, I like different varieties so lengthen my harvest window for as long as possible. IÂm more about fresh eating than I am about freezing. I find the flavor differences to be subtle, and actually enjoy their differences. IÂve yet to find a bad tasting raspberryÂ. (expect for those raspberries that go beyond ripe of course) What zone are you in? IÂm not sure how the elevation will affect them. Have you asked the nurseries about that? Maybe a bit more searching on that topic? Let us know what varieties youÂre thinking about. Good luck! -Glenn

I will put my 2 cents in now that I have had my peaches in for a few years. I have not found PF24-C to be any more cold hardy or bud hardy than any of my other trees. My O'Henry made it through a real tough winter last year just as well as the PF24-C, and there is no comparison in taste. (The trees both made it but there was no fruit due to a horrible spring) Apparently McKay is not Wisconsin Balmer, as the thread linked above was mentioned to be. The link below also mentions it. I decided to get Contender, Polly, Ranger, and Indian Free Peach for my aunt in Iowa. Wow... that's a great article on rootstocks for kumquat and calamondin. I have a lot of citrumelo rootstock right now and I thought it was a generally good rootstock for hardy citrus, but that article suggests otherwise (for kumquats and calamondin). I would order from Four Winds Growers. They say they use dwarfing rootstock, but I am not sure what exactly.

Raspberries are native to Korea, and they are adapted to significant winter weather. Our Heritage raspberries, here in Madison, Wisconsin, are not adversely affected by winter weather. I cut them down in the fall, and they grow back up in the spring, with the first flowers in July, and the first fruit in August. We have issues with Japanese beetles, and with spotted wing Drosophilia, but I have not seen die back due to cold weather.

Does anyone have a picture of dieback ?...i don't see anything out of the ordinary until green growth starts showing up, then i surely see the dieback with all the bare canes.

Canes look dehydrated to me. Of course if you leave the whole cane of everbearing the top 1/3 will dieback no matter what.

I was thinking maybe you have another problem going on. Borers, some type of blight?
