Globe Thistle Bare Root. Which end is up??? Help!
Comments (2)Never looked at their roots, so not much help there, although I doubt you're looking at top growth. Most likely, those are roots, or vestiges of roots. What I do know is if you like one globe thistle, you'd better like one thousand. I admired this plant at one time, so much so that I introduced it to a number of plantings. Wasn't too many years later, globe thistle was just about all I had in those spots. Just sayin.... +oM...See MoreScottish Thistle in Southern California
Comments (9)LOL, I had a grove of running bamboo in the back, my neighbor and I agreed to get rid of it. Well, in the same area a grove of Scottish Thistle emerged from nowhere! If bamboo is the plant from he//, Scotland must be worse!! It is 6 plus feet tall and VICIOUSLY barbed with thorns (PENETRATED MY GARDENING GLOVES!). Oh, the bamboo is coming back now too, but this time I might be rooting for the BAMBOO!!!...See MoreStar Thistle is taking over! Poison Oak problems too...Help!
Comments (1)Star Thistle spreads via seeds and roots so a total Invasive Vegetation Management program is needed. Here is a link that might be useful: Star Thistle IVM...See MoreLow harvest -weeds take over
Comments (7)obviously you need to stop them from setting seeds now, so use your scythe with abandon. Next year consider covering the beds fairly late, after most weeds have sprouted, and plant only transplants in holes through the mulch. I prefer wood chips, because they give you two years of no weeds, and they make a layer of seed-free soil eventually, but black plastic and cardboard will do too. Basically, you will be unable to seed directly for a couple of years or more until weeds can be controlled. This can always be done with relatively little work, so long as you mulch and plant late. I am also in SE MI, and a good time to do this is around June 15. Perennial weeds, you will have to pull by hand....See Morejean001a
