Here's an announcment I recieved about the Racheff Spring Plant Sale:

Ivan Racheff House and Gardens 2015 Spring Plant Sale

Saturday, March 28, 2015

Hours: 9:00 am 2:00 pm

The annual Racheff Spring Plant Sale is one of the first plant sales of the season in

Knoxville and features notable nurseries including Beaver Creek, Sunlight Gardens,

Jansch and Whaley Nurseries, Tennessee Naturescapes, Brian White Nursery and Dixie

Lee Greenhouses. Offerings from these vendors include wildflowers, azaleas and

camellias, other blooming shrubs and trees, hostas, and many other plants which thrive in

this area. Greenwell Perennials often has unusual hellebores and succuents. Growers

will be on site to answer questions. In addition to plants there will be handcrafted bluebird

houses and other wood items and a large selection of hypertufa troughs. Our famous hot

dogs and brats will be on the grill by 11:00 and taco soup, chips, drinks and desserts are

always a treat. For more information call 865-435-4769.

The Ivan Racheff House and Gardens property is owned by the Tennessee Federation

of Gardens and is a featured garden during the Dogwood Arts Festival. Visitors can

expect to enjoy thousands of tulips, daffodils, azaleas and other flowering shrubs and

trees on the three and one half acre property.

I agree, it's hard to decide between practical and pretty. I love Bradford Pears. They remind me of the street where I grew up, lined on both sides with Bradfords and in spring it was like magic snow when they were in bloom, but most 'professional' gardeners don't really like them. I think if you can stick with a relatively native species you like, then you are ok... I also think a lot of this has to do with where you live. If you have a tree protected by lots of other trees, houses, etc you may have a better chance than if you have one big tree on a relatively empty lot. Plus, as JR says- when there is a storm that big, it doesn't much matter, you do what you can. The Mobile Botanical Garden Plant sale is this weekend if anyone in the area is looking for good stuff- we got a terrific Satsuma tree there last fall- and we already have Satsumas ripening to show for it!

I am interested in Edsiajb's Tillandsia as well; let me know what you are interested in. And Kenneth, I would like any of the following: red Angelwing begonia, jades, gasterias, aloes (anything for a strawberry pot), as well as any alternathera / coleus you have left over (if it's from the sale I will compensate/donate for it, please). You are welcome to anything on my exchange page, but I am saving you the best manettia cordifolia I have (very hardy for me and a "crackhouse" for hummingbirds and butterflies!). I'll be updating my trades and placing all info on my Exchange Page if I can find it. I'm still trying to figure out this new GW site, while trying to familiarize myself with the new "Southern Living Garden Book". Those two things are irritating enough - tomorrow I have a root canal, so "stay tuned". ;-D (Below is a shot of one of my many clumps of pulmonaria, ordered from "up nawth" because B'ham nurseries deem it not hardy here. It's 5+ years old, and been through one of the hottest/driest summers on record.)

One more - UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge is having their sale on Friday and Saturday, April 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday is for members only but Saturday is open to the public.

By variety, so I can get a log going on yield and flavor, the best flavor so far was scintilla, oneal, and misty, bountiful blue has yielded the most but flavor is just ok and they have noticeably larger seeds. This is just my first full year with blueberries, the key for me has been selecting varieties that have low chill hours needed, keeping soil ph low and shading south and west in summer, first season I fertilized with ammonium sulfate at 1 tsp per gallon of water, per plant each week with supplemental watering in between as needed to gain size quickly, and have backed off to every two weeks this season. So far so good.
