Bush bean spacing

israelithyme

I was reading in the Sq. foot gardening book that the spacing for bush beans is 9 to a square, however, my seed packet says to space them 6" apart. I am wondering what has worked best for other gardeners (this is my first time planting bush beans) -- do you put 9 to a square or 4 to a square (or maybe 5 as a compromise?) and how does it affect yield? I've got 20 squares that I can devote to the bush beans and am seriously hoping that that will provide enough beans for daily fresh eating for two people --does that sound about right?

I'm planting 3 heirloom varieties: Blue Lake 274, Henderson's Bush Lima Bean, and Jackson Wonder Bush Lima Bean and this year I'm gardening in Austin, Texas (and conditions seem already quite different from my home gardening experience in central Israel!)

Any help, personal experience, or advice would be much appreciated!
