Planting Iris in March-April in Zone 7 ?

I have a lot of new Iris rhizomes to plant. Here in New Jersey Zone 7 it is a little cool right now and hardly Spring-like, but I know I have to get these rhizomes planted.

Has anyone planted Bearded Iris rhizomes this time of the year vs. Mid-Summer to Fall ?

I am in the process of cataloging all of mine..2 beds done so far and a total of 125 irises..and I still have 8 beds to go...some women do shoes, some do purses, I do irises!

I am in Zone 7 also, but in TN.. are they in pots right now or just bare root? If your area is finished with the heavy freezing, I would go ahead and plant now. Don't expect bloom this spring..irises are tough and they should survive. If they are in pots I would leave them until this summer/fall..In pots they will still bloom..

I only have 2 planted in pots - all the others are bare-root, and many more are on their way to me. Unfortunately, it is snowing here today in New Jersey - the Iris bed is not yet prepared, so either way, I have to wait to plant them all - TB's, versicolor, virginica, and Louisiana's are all en route to me.

Its nice to hear from so many of you and some of you who are not so far away ... I am in St Marys County , not far from you Sunnibel and Mootgirl ? Because of health reasons I didn't get to plant my kale and collards this past fall ... We made another raised bed friday, the soil is warmer than I expected so I was jonesing to plant some veggies yesterday, so I decided to go for it , I planted kale, collards, spinach, vitamin green, lettuce and watercress yesterday ... we covered it with a tarp just in case this rain we are getting today decides to get heavy and then we will uncover it tomorrow , supposed to be 50s all week , a little cold a few nights but hoping it will be okay ... I don't have the big garden spot ready yet but need to do it soon , I want to plant out some radishes and snap peas asap ... Thank you all for all the great advice ! Bring on Spring ! Iris

Hi All. Sorry I've been away for awhile. -Family passings & such. Winter has effectively devastated my garden, so, being the optimist that I am, I went to the NW Flower/Garden show twice this past week to get my motivation up. I work March 7th, so wont be able to attend the Green Elephant. HOWEVER, I do have a few things that I would like to put out as offerings to people for trades, if interested, and we can swap on a day other than 3/7. Wanteds: I'm still going for tropicaleze theme, with focus on glaucous leaf & black leaf items, or chartreuse. or verigated., flowers that pop in my yard are white, or green. Bananas (would take pups) Brugsmansias (Lost all my biggies), Calla lilies, Cannas, Colocasias, iris, daylilies, black or gold raspberry canes, huckleberries, ferns. Unfortunately, all of my verigated iris has been lost. I gave alot of it out a couple of years ago. If it has done well for anyone who would like to complete the circle with it and schlepp some back to me, I'd appreciate it. I have to trade: bamboos: gold, or thin purple culm that I forgot what it's variety is. Phlox; White (David) Daylilies (varied) passion flower (purple crown, (white constance elliot) siberian iris, (schwann), (?white butterflies?) Maybe able to divide some hostas this year. red rose, (?Parkland series?) still potted& growing well, & maybe some other random stuff.

I'm in the same zone. When the spring is warm, you can expect your beardeds to start blooming around April 8. If spring is cool, like it was this year, the iris start to bloom April 15. Even in a cool year, TB iris are mostly bloomed out here by the first week of May. Then Siberians, flag, Louisiana and japanese take over.

I would say that Sabal Palmetto is the best one out of those for you to try but I also recommend Butia Odorata, Capitata, and Yatay. I'm in zone 8b Montgomery, AL and these are very tolerant of cold. We got down to 13F a couple of years ago and almost all got through it with no damage whatsoever. However if you're willing to protect a palm extensively it's worth trying almost any of them. Right now I have a Phoenix Roebelini, Queen, Cat palm, Majesty palm, and two Mule palms planted in my backyard. Most I planted early this spring but the Phoenix Roebelinii survived the winter in a heated, portable greenhouse. Our minimum low this past winter was 24F and when I took the greenhouse down in March there was only a tiny amount of cold damage on the newest fronds. Since then it's recovered fully.

I would probably get the bare rooted ones in pots if possible, that way new roots would start to form and then when you are able to get them in the ground they will have a jump start on growth.. and hopefully the others that are on their way will hold off until you can work the ground and get their bed ready.. Since you are getting snow on the 1st day of Spring, I wont share my weather with you, even though its cloudy and damp, its better than snow..We have had our share of that also..

This is so typical of New Jersey weather in March. We have had some of our worst snow storms/blizzards in March. So I'm not surprised we are having snow today. Many of the rhizomes will come this week, but many will also not be shipped to me until Mid-July (when Beardeds are supposed to be planted). I have ordered a total of 25 Iris rhizomes. So I am going to have quite a bit of work to do, but I'm so looking forward to it. I love Iris and can't wait to have a yard full of blooms.

I'm so envious. I can't imagine having so many Irises in your garden. How wonderful for you.

I look out the window, and all I see is SNOW. I'm so bummed out right now about this. I have all these Irise rhizomes coming in the mail, and can't plant them. I haven't prepared the Iris bed for them yet. I have to get to Home Depot tomorrow for more Garden soil, bone meal, and a garden rake.

I have a Louisiana iris rhizome sitting in a pot of water right now. This is ridiculous!
