Succulent Growing in Granite Rock Crack
I discovered this while doing my rounds this morning. It's growing in a crack in the bottom of a huge granite boulder. What is it, and can I move it to another spot?

Comments (10)Having had it pop up voluntarily in OH, but not nearly often enough, I've seen it looking like the 1st pic, after trying to transplant. I was hesitant to disagree with you, Deco, TY. Good luck, it's an exceptionally cute plant IMO! Growing in the crack like that should let you know it can't abide being soggy all of the time, or ever in standing water....See Moregrowing succulents in humid louisiana...help!
Comments (78)Yea. I decided to put them all in pots and I moved them to the front of my house which faces south. Lots more sun. I'm still worried about them getting sunburned. Succulents at the local nursery here are all out in the sun and are doing just fine. When I put mine in the sun they start to get spots on them. I assume that they aren't used to it yet. Comments (13)To answer you original question "Succulents dying, how can I save them?". The quick answer - you won't save them. Throw them away. If you really are interested in growing healthy plants, you have lots of work to do. It's a great hobby, but you can't go into it blindly. I will try and keep this as simple as I can, please don't take offense: - You should not be growing these plants until you have done at least a modicum of research, unless your intention is to only have them as temporary, short-lived decorative plants. These plants were doomed from the start. Poor pot selection, poor soil mix, inadequate light, inadequate air movement, inadequate temperature range, and an owner with a lack of information. I partially blame the retailer for selling an attractive but terribly ineffective mini-garden. - Succulents ARE NOT houseplants. They will not be healthy indoors without significant effort. What you may think are "healthy" plants are instead plants that are tolerant of abuse which can only put up with so much before they start to go downhill. Most succulents need fresh air and sunshine for at least a few months a year. Indoors year-round they are essentially being tortured. -"gnats" are fruit flies. They feed off of organics in the soil, like decomposing peat. Peat is probably the single worst ingredient for growing pot plants. -We have all been in the same position. 9 years agoKen, I know the roots will be cooler under the rock, and fig cuttings root slower in cooler soil, but they don't mold or dry out. The boulders are here on site, and we just found some that didn't continue under ground (many do) so we could dig a slanted tunnel under the boulder with the tip of the cutting under an inch of soil next to the boulder, and the bottom of the cutting securely under the rock. IF the cuttings root and grow, the boulder will protect the baby tree from cold winds and will keep the temps warmer during the night. Figs LOVE heat!
I root cuttings all the time in shallow trenches outside. But they have to be moved to a container till they get bigger, so the experiment is to let them root and grow in their final place from day one.
Why so many figs? I started with one and found out there are some amazing varieties that taste like raspberry and strawberry jam. Some drip honey and are just juicy and delicious. Couldn't stop with just one tree........
Here is your documentation. A picture is worth a thousand words. This shot was taken this month about a week ago. See the little white stick at the bottom of the boulder? That is a plastic fork with the name of the fig written in permenant ink marking the spot where I expect to see a fig leaf popping out. As soon as a leaf emerges, I'll surround that baby with chicken wire to protect it from the many critters out there.
