Dark vs. Light Tile for Smallish House?

Our house is a ranch. It's probably on the smaller side compared to most houses discussed here. It's got a large great room and a smallish kitchen.

This is the Southwest so we want tile in all of the living areas. We'd decided on wood look tile for the kitchen, entryway, great room and hallways. But I also like some travertine-ish looking tiles.

The tile guy is telling me that a lighter tile is a better choice in a smaller house. But I see conflicting things online.

Which is better in a smaller house? Darker or lighter floors? And which is more neutral? The tile guy says the wood look tile will limit our color choices for furniture, paint, etc. but the Maria Killam blog says that wood floors are the true neutral.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer when it comes to dark vs. light floors in any size home.

I do love the wood looking tile. I think a lighter or mid-tone color would look great and is less likely to show dirt, dust, etc... (Dark floors show just about everything).

I would shop around and if possible, buy some samples and bring them to your house. You'd be surprised how different stuff looks in your home rather than in the stores (since most stores have florescent lighting). With the samples you can see how your current furniture and décor looks.

I like the darker tile, too. However, I would wait as cpartist suggests. We have a white floor with dark lower cabs and white uppers. The dark lowers ground the space so I don't mind the white floors - but just to clarify ours are a mottled stained white cork. I'd never do a solid white floor. I'm just not tidy enough for that.

It's a good color for warmth, but if you look at the LRV, which means light reflecting value, it's only 64. I recommend a very similar, but lighter color also from Ben Moore called Wind's Breath. The LRV is 70, so a little brighter, but it also has less orange and is more of a warm neutral. When you said very bright, this is the color I thought of. It is a white with grey, green, and blue undertones and I have it in my house and love it.

* Also when looking at the hallway ^... that photo of the "door" to the right is actually an elevator door...(Its faux painted...done before we moved here.) That is also the dilemma... if husband paints trim white... there is that door and I do NOT want to paint it white. so can the trim around the door be painted?
