Need quick soapstone install advice---help!
Comments (5)So they did patch it and it does look good, at least for now---just looks like a vein. He pointed out that it's not that different from the seam, which I guess is a fair point. But I'm a bigger fan of planned seams than unplanned ones... Home stretch at last, though---hopefully getting the backsplash up over the long weekend, if we get really organized. Yay!...See MoreCalling florida_joshua: Soapstone support qstn
Comments (4)You can get angle in any width you want. If it's a 3" apron, get a 2 1/2" apron. One leg of the angle goes against the apron, the other against the soapstone. A metal shop can make little end caps for the angle. If you use 2 x 2 angle, they can make a piece of 2 x 2 x 3/16" thick square to fill in the end. Put a couple of screw holes in that square piece and you can now attach the angle to the legs. If they are worried about the seam, use a piece of angle there as well. It can span the seam and tee into the first piece of angle. The attachment can either be a welded one or the metal shop can make them bolt together....See MoreDid fabricator install soapstone correctly?Hes back today!
Comments (6)I'm sorry I had not had a chance to call you back. I'll give a call today to talk about it. The main problem with the granite guys doing soapstone is they do not want to refinish the top of the soapstone. Soapstone from the factory often comes in very uneven and usually polished too high if they are the harder varieties. A lot of guys just use texturing brushes to try to even things out, but as you may figure out it just puts a little texture on the stone . . .not the greatest feel if you are not going for a leathered or brushed look and feel. IÂm hearing this more and more. This is also coming from the "leaders" in the industry. It can be done as a finish, but if you are looking for a honed or matte finish this is not the answer. A polished stone like granite and marble come in with a factory polish and you never touch the top surface . . . soapstone is different. The finish on the soapstone is a big part of how soapstone will act and perform in your home . . . it is the same across the board with honed marble or granite. The finish should be even flat and have no polish to the stone. Harder soapstoneÂs can be a challenge as they tend to need more attention than the softer varieties, but the same process is followed. So the answer to your question, the fabricator will feel he is not responsible for the finish on the surface of the soapstone. You will feel he is. He will not want to fix this as it is typically not his problem with other stones. Try to understand his side as this is not something he was ever responsible for. Brazilian Black is a harder variety and just using a random orbital sander will probably make the situation worse. The harder varieties have lots of hard areas and soft areas, so the dry sandpaper will eat up the softer areas leaving the harder areas in place creating texture....See MoreSoapstone fabrication questions -- need help
Comments (10)As far as _only_ 90 degree corners in the stone, that's utter and complete BS!! A 90" corner actually should be avoided in stone because it is a stress riser, a weak point from which a crack can start. If your sink has a highly polished top edge/corner, your reveal idea will be exceptional, but even if it's brushed, it's YOUR CALL! Here's my DIY soapstone prep sink cutout with 1/2" radius edge and 4" diameter corners. The reveal is supposed to be neutral, but between my cut and the slightly irregular fireclay sink, you get what you get! Stay strong, get what you want. The fabricator is a wanker.
