Jenny, you're awesome! I felt more confident getting the Miss Kim due to your posts. Thx for answering all my questions. Little Birdie, the calico you saw, also loves the balcony. She was afraid at first of the water fountain (cats hate H2O), but it doesn't bother her now. I also have a small planter with mints: I bought spearmint for some recipes, and Birdie's "grandma" kindly provided us with catnip and lemon balm. I think I will add chives. And maybe plant oats or grass seed for the cat. She used to enjoy having much larger places to run, but being reined in doesn't seem to bother her much now. Perhaps b/c she's getting older. Incidentally, those pigeons (from another post) come to drink occasionally at the fountain, and I think they are nesting on the balcony right above us.

I toured her garden -very nice & she really has a green thumb. The recipes for stopping mildew & slugs are great too. I can't use ammonia(too hard to breathe it at all with my lungs) But would be great for large garden. Can't imagine planting all those pots in the ground. Easier than having to divide all the time though. I think she has been on here, name sounds familiar. TFS Jan

Glib the do have a "culture page". Just click on "Cornell Gardening Info". Cornell is arguably the top agricultural research university in the nation. Vegetables are plants and there are lots of variations/varieties. Many that some would call heat or cold loving do well in both heat and cold and some people have much different results than others in the same climate. I tend to look for reviews from growers in hot climates because I live in one. I think dividing up the varieties by heat or cold loving would mess everything up. Once a variety is placed in a category people would over look it if their climate differed. Living in an extreme climate people where I live get told all the time this thing or that thing cannot be grown here. However you would be surprised how often that information is incorrect. If the site where put together like that many (perhaps you too) would complain that too many varieties are in the wrong category and choose not to participate. Even Garden Web does not have a heat or cold loving vegetable variety forum and I don't see you being negative about Garden Web. Cornell's site is not a forum and not in competition with this site. I guess what I'm trying to say is; I just don't understand the apparent double standard. Is there another site you can direct me to that has an organized searchable database of vegetable varieties. One where members can post reviews and keep track of the varieties they grow and review? One where all the reviews for each variety can be found in one place? It does not have to have everything I need or have to present information only how I want to see it. Just so long as the reviews for each variety are easy to find and all kept in one place. Please direct me to it.

There are all sorts of personal modifications, but the original formula, as published in research reports by Cornell University, translates to 2 tablespoons of ultralight horticultural oil (Sunspray oil is the brand they used) and 4 teaspoons (one heaping tablespoon) of Arm & Hammer baking soda in a gallon of water. Originally, up to a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap was added in order to emulsify the oil in the case that the mixture couldn't be continuously agitated while spraying. That isn't necessary with current versions of most ultralight horticultural oils because they now contain an emulsifying agent (see the label). Ron Jorgenson, a commercial grower in East Texas, later added a tablespoon of fish oil/seaweed emulsion, a few drops of Superthrive (a plant vitamin mix), and any necessary Bt soluion, terming the mixture the "Modified Cornell formula." Amateur rosarians have done all sorts of other things to the Cornell formula. Some may be good; some are bad.
