What kind of weed am I?

This has completely taken over our verge in Salt Lake City, Ut. In the fall it puts out little purplish white flowers, then spiky seeds on stalks. I would like to know the name of my enemy. I've dug it all out, by hand, mats of roots, tap roots, during this weird warm February, before the soil turns to pottery.

If you still don't have an answer,contact your county's Extension SErvice office as they likely know local weeds better than we do.

It does not look like Rudbeckia which have dark cones for seedheads, nor does it look like the seed head of Daucus carota / Queen Anne's Lace. Not sure what it is.

Image is too small. However you can apply a per-emergent herbicide such as XL or Amaze mid-Feb., mid-May and mid- September to prevent them germinating in the first place. Here is a link that might be useful: XL

Getting rid of unwanted plants while small and easy to handle is the key to maintaining control in a garden. If you didn't plant it, the odds are 99%+ you don't want it. When mowing, aim the chute away from beds to prevent throwing seeds into them. If it won't pull up easily, patches like this (solid area of unwanted plant growth) can be smothered.
