Tornado in Brooklyn
Comments (7)I appreciate your concern and shared relief that my garden was spared! I'm glad to say that a friend's fabulous rooftop garden also escaped. I think, given that he's much more of a gardener than I am, I would have been more upset at the destruction of his garden than mine. We had a tornado in Brooklyn in the Bay Ridge and Sunset Park neighborhoods (south of where the recent one hit) in 2007. I really, really hope these two incidents are a strange repeat of once-in-a-lifetime events. Although with global warming, weather instability is a big part of the picture. This makes me feel like starting up my compost routine again, although diverting my trash from the NYC landfill is hardly a fix for a global problem. Some little thing I can do to feel I'm playing my part, I guess. Other than that, I can pray. Or move. I almost left the city earlier this year, when I nearly got a job upstate. The cleanup continues in my neighborhood. Street trees are all trimmed of major branches, so now it's time to tend to the trees in the backyards. It's common to see a line of workmen marching out of tiny little townhouses carrying the cut remains of a 18 - 24" diameter tree. Then they bring the pieces to the street and proceed with chainsawing there, in front of the truck where their mulcher is roaring away. All parts of the tree go into the mulcher -- brown wood and green branches. Nobody has the luxury of time to make firewood. I'd still like to go ahead with my firepit tribute, though. I can't carry firewood at this point (two weeks post-surgery, I'm healing but have a ways to go), but maybe I can get some neighbors to help. We have space at the back of the building, where the deck overhangs, where we could leave the wood to season before burning it....See MoreTrachycarpus Fortunei grows in Brooklyn New York
Comments (46)As some here know I have had 2 large windmills in the ground going on 5 years, with a smaller one added 2 years ago. As stated well by jimhardy, tropicalzone7 et al, there are huge variations of climate within zones. Oklahoma City is technically the same zone as NYC and although we got 14 inches of snow in one storm last year and had sustained single digits, the two areas are vastly different in climate. I think we should agree that a hardy palm or any plant for that matter should be rated for a zone by its ability to thrive in that zone continuously without protection of any kind. The first 2 years my Trachys went unprotected and suffered bad damage from the wind and freezing rain. My Butia lived under a tarp with a 100 watt flood light happily for 2 years but died with the same protection after 3 days of temps below 12 degrees. I am confident all my hardy palms would not thrive without protection. I even lost a big Bismarkia in a pot from the heat last summer! Comments (9)I highly recommend this VRBO rental in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Brooklyn Garden Apartment Stayed there three years ago with my husband and teen daughter. Best trip I've had to NYC. The owner of the building is a successfully published children's book author. The apartment was well decorated, and had everything we needed. It's in a beautiful old brownstone neighborhood, with quick walking access to lots of restaurants and groceries/supplies. Easy walk to a lovely park and quick train ride to the Botanical Garden. Apartment was clean, beds were comfortable. Easy ride into Manhattan and for fun, Coney Island. One bedroom with a king bed, one bedroom with a single, and a sofa in the LR....See MorePaigeMartineauInteriors
