bareroot roses, grade #1, how many canes should it have?

I recently received 8 bareroot roses which I understood was grade #1. However, several only have 2 canes, the others 3 and 4. Is this right? Also, will other canes form or the ones there now are the only ones I'll have?

Today I received my bare root order from Edmunds. 14 roses all with three or more huge canes. If they came from Edmunds, e-mail your concerns to them. They respond very quickly. As fare as 2 canes per bush go, I'd be scratching my head. Not saying they won't grow or bloom. They should be OK and probably put out new canes this year.

According to the American Association of Nurserymen:

Grade 1

Hybrid Teas and Grandifloras must have three or more strong canes,
two of which are at least 18 in. (45 cm) long. The canes
should be well-spaced around the graft.

Floribundas meet the same standards, but the canes need only be 15 in. (38 cm) long.

Polyanthas must have four or more canes at least 12 in. (30 cm) long.

Climbers and ramblers must have three or more canes 24 in. (60 cm) long.

Note: "Strong canes" is not defined, but is generally
accepted to mean canes which have attained their mature size in
diameter. As a minimum, at least one cane must be at least 1/2 in. (12
mm) in diameter.

Grade 1 1/2

Hybrid Teas and Grandifloras must have two or more canes at least 15 in. (38 cm) long.

Floribundas must have two or more canes 14 in. (35 cm) long.

Climbers must have two or more canes 18 in. (45 cm) long.

Note: Polyanthas which do not meet Grade 1 standards are not graded.

Grade 2

All classes must have two or more canes 12 in. (30 cm) long.

Assuming that yours are modern hybrid tea roses, if they were advertized as Grade #1, then your roses should have had at least three strong canes. Check the catalog/website to make sure how they were labelled, then I'd contact the vendor. IF any of your new arrivals are antique/older/species, then most of them are not graded by the same criteria, since there is so much natural variation of vigor among them.

On the Rooter Pots: Susan4952 -- no, these rooter pots are not for "bands." Basically, it's just a way to make a new plant of fairly good size quickly from a plant that you already have a full grown specimen of. It would not work on a small limb or a "band" size plant. A 3/8 inch cane is probably the minimum diameter you would want to work with. You can use up to about a 5/8 inch cane. Seil and TNY78 -- you DO make a cut in the cambium layer all the way around the cane that passes through the rooter pot -- yes, all the way around -- and you DO remove the cambium layer, down to the white wood for a length of about 1/2 inch. I know that sounds like it is girdling the plant and would kill the top part, but it doesn't do that in practice. I've tried it both ways -- part girdling and full girdling, and the full girdling method works best. And I do put a thick gel-type rooting hormone on the cut part. And then it just takes considerable patience for it to do its thing, while you are making weekly inspections to make sure there is still water in the reservoir. I use a turkey baster to refill the reservoir. And as you can see in my picture in the prior post, I use 3 bamboo stakes around each rooter pot to keep it from sliding down the stem it is on, and to keep that cane from falling over from the weight of the rooter pot. The advantage of a rooter pot over starting a cutting is that you get a larger than band size plant the first season, because you are using a bigger stem to start with than a band would be started with. I would get them planted asap. Mabey help them along with a little root start fertilzer. My holes end up being very muddy when digging roses. I dig a good deep hole, mix in a good handful of 6-8-6 granular organic fert, mix that around, make a little 'cone' of dirt, spread the roots over it, fill in with good compost and soil mix. Once it gets almost full soak new dirt with water to make sure to get all the air pockets out, sort of wiggling rose around a bit to make sure dirt is caving in around roots. You will then see soil really settles then fill up more even barley covering the crown. The crown (bottom part where the branches come out) is where you always will want to get nice new growth from. If you bury this to low sun cant get to it and new shoots wont break (come out) . Thats why they say use a stick for proper planting height. Your area being so hot I would protect that crown at first as lots of your new growth will come off the branchs that are already there. Next spring uncover crown to get new shoots. Epson salt tea is good for roses too but im sure I would use any yet. umm hmm ok that my tips I have Sombreuil and out of 100 roses I would say its in my top 3.

Ah, gee, thanks, Helen. I was fixing to offer to drive up to Dallas and take Poseidon off Ben's hands when you had to go and talk him into *keeping* that one. ;-) I'm guessing that I have in the range of 40 or so, but who has time to count? (I know, I know... It's not like it's a big number, but still... Honestly, when I think of the poor neglected ones in the pot-ghetto-zone which is in part shade where I don't need to water them *every* day, many of which are growing backwards as a consequence...) I feel like an Imelda, having shoes that will never get worn, I fear... Are you guys mostly retired, or just *way* better at time management than I am? (Gardening isn't "work" for me per se, but I think I spend way too much of my "gardening" time just looking, admiring, and daydreaming and not actually accomplishing much.)

Sorry it took so long to get back. I found a large box of roses at the front door. They were own root bare root Took all day to get them planted. Just wanted to say make sure you plant your graft at least 4 inches under ground. Can be a bit of a trick sometimes. But you can plant it at an angle so that the branches are pointed up. Then just point end ends of the roots down. As others have said trim off the brown tips before planting. Even if your rose ends up under ground it will be fine as it will not survive winter if the graft is not buried. Mine that came today had a lot of damage to the canes that had to be trimmed off. So by the time they were planted some only stuck out of the ground a inch. With some of the canes (branches) totally buried. Best wishes for a happy rose season.
