Snow owl question

I have a question about snow owls. A few weeks ago there was one sitting close to the house, about 20' from the patio. All the pictures I've seen of snow owls show yellow or blue eyes. This one was close enough to the house that I could look right into its eyes, they were black. I had read somewhere that snow owls have such acute hearing that they can detect movement under the snow, it was sitting right beside some snow covered evergreens that mice/moles like to hide under. Could the eyes have been black because of dilated pupils when it was hunting? marric
