Hoya Krimson Queen with her crown

This is a 15 year old plant ,

she has never bloomed, but last year after I started her on a fertilizer, 10-52-10, she started this wild explosion of ONLY rose and ivory vines. I have since read about, and ordered, Foliar Pro as a better fertilizer, from Al's comments.

This plant was given to me by a friend about 8 years ago. It is potted in an 8" pot with sandy soil. I am afraid to try to repot it as it is so large. There is only one plant in the soil. I'm have taken cuttings and rooted them in a small pot to try to create the "root-bound" effect and get blooms.

That's a beauty, Smi2!! It's very happy. I've grown 'KQ' off and on for over 35 years, and I have never gotten it to bloom. I can't tell you exactly why as I treat all my Hoyas the same. If I had to guess, I'd say because it takes a lot of energy to put out and maintain the all-white (non-chlorphyll) growth, energy it might otherwise use for flowering. Though I know folks have gotten it to bloom... I have gotten 'KP' to bloom, but rarely.

Anyway, with a plant that beautiful, I wouldn't worry much if it ever bloomed. You're definitely doing something right, so keep doing it!

Thanks, Denise. I have chosen to experiment with cuttings. I have started 5 cuttings from this plant and will keep them in a very small pot. This one pictured is in a large pot. I have ordered Foliage Pro and will soon only ferilize with that. Maybe I can manage and control these cuttings to the degree that they have a better chance of blooming.

On the other hand, the parent Hoya is so beautiful, I might just keep her on the Bloom Booster at 25% just to have the rose and ivory leaves, at least for next summer.

A little daunting to hear that you have tried for blooms for 35 years!

ha ha Jan I just emailed you about Krimson Queen!!! lol Do you guys want me to do any trade transporting? I am meeting Jan at lunch Thursday and also going to Ricky's so i can take Helen,s. Here's my lil Krimson Queen! The pink edges don't come thru in the photos. Either of you want some of this one. I am sure it's pretty common. It seems so much happier out under the pool screen than in my bedroom window. I got this 1/3 this size a couple yrs ago from Lindaleaf. BTW Helen, You want some cuttings of that coral crown behind the Krimson Queen? It's getting kind of tall and I might as well start a few cuttings of it for Ricky's.

Kelly/Pug: The E.millii in the pic is a hand me down from my mom. I received it about 3 years ago. It was getting too big for her to move it around and too tall for most of her sunny spots in her house. She gave me a cutting which I have grown to about 18 inches and also coaxed it into branching. It is also known as Crown of Thorns or Christ Rose. Some believe this is what could of been used as the "Crown of thorns". This plant is native to Madagascar as was imported to the Middle East a very long time ago. They thrive in Thailand and many hybrids have been developed there. Some of the hybrids have more flower than leaves. The flowers are truly cyanthia and are a little tacky/sticky(I do not know what purpose in nature, maybe help in pollination). I have 19 varieties at this time. The first one is a group photo. Hard to see the details. The other 3 are my newest COT additions. One of the actually has reddish green leaves. And E.millii siegfriedii which is one of my older cot that has leaves which are completely red on the bottom and green on the top of the leave. My large one is most likely a E.millii splendens. Denise from Omaha grows a lot of these as well and I am pretty sure has a blog setup where she mentions these plants. Out of Africa is a good place to find some of the cot varieties. I am currently on the look out for a variegated COT. There is a cultivar named 'Fireworks' which is currently for sale on ebay that I may pick up. I think I will start a mini lemon tree too. When i go south for vacation the end of next month I will be sure to pick up something that I do not see around here often. All this talk is making me want to visit a nursery. Also one of my favorite plants Dorstenia Lavrani. Their is a male and a female form. The female form with age looks similar to a mini grove of palms. This plant is super easy to grow and care for. The flowers look like mini stars that explode to eject their seeds. -David

Thanks! Usual 2.5" pots, and I have had them ohh, right around 6 or 7 weeks now. My neobudica is right around 16 inches long already. They were all pretty small on arrival. They have been in a sheltered south window, watered as the pots got dry, misted regularly with plain water 2-4x a week, and once a week get a foliar fertilizer spray/misting. Kelp extract based stuff, called Tappin' roots. This was my first time ordering plants and with these species, so not sure how my experiences measures up but I am happy. I really need to find some trellises, I haven't found anything locally yet.

Yeah, you are correct, Monica. It is a marketing ploy! That being said, there are many cv. Krimson Princesses (aka Rubra) that are superior in quality. It just depends on the health of the mother plant and what kind of growth the mother plant wants to make. I could, for example, make a gorgeous specimen of my Krimson Queen, by cutting the best growth out and rooting it in a different pot. My original plant would then look subpar, in comparison.

Well... I wouldn't exactly say I've tried for blooms. It's one that is grow-worthy without blooms, so I don't really care that much about flowers. For me, there are species that have such beautiful foliage that flowers are just a bonus. And then I have others that I keep just for the flowers as the foliage is a bit ho-hum.

I've always had a little trouble with the variegated carnosas. And by trouble I mean they tend to dehydrate easier than the standard carnosa. And once they do, they're hard to bring back. I've got a 'KP' growing in with a pubicalyx right now and it's doing very well for me. By themselves, I tend to underwater them. Don't ask me why it's doing well for me with another Hoya, as I don't water pubicalyx any more than I would if it was just 'KP' by itself - I'm just glad it is doing well!! Maybe it'll actually bloom grown this way! I'm thinking the next time I get 'KQ', I will grow it in hydroton - I think it might be the perfect candidate to grow that way!

Denise, I just ordered some Growstones. Never have used them. I planted my new cuttings in Orchid mix but find they tend to dry out too quickly. Especially the H Bella. Have you ever used or heard of anyone using those water crystals in the mix? It seems the hoyas need a porous soil for oxygen but one that does not dry too quickly.

You are right about KQ being foliage-worthy. Visitors to our home think it is a plastic plant, or think that the leaves will turn green eventually. I am amazed that this growth spurt of rose and ivory leaves is lasting so long and the leaves are not dropping after 6-8 months. Thank you for your comments, I learn from them.

Very attractive Krimson Queen smi2! I just bought a rather large KQ and

decided to take some cuttings and they all shriveled up...might of been too close to the heat. Hopefully next attempt roots.
