Best Countertop for Heavy Use Island?
Comments (8)Well, if you do laminate on the perimeter, I vote for another laminate or a hardwood on the island. If you go soapstone on the perimeter, I could also see wood, marble, or a marble-looking granite on the island. As much as I believe that soapstone is a family-friendly surface I could be thrilled to have, IF you're not doing soapstone everywhere, I think I'd keep it on the perimeter, since it can be chipped or carved into (but I think the different types of soapstone have different levels of hardness). I'm mentioning that, because I'm thinking of the kids writing on it. Also that it may become less than perfectly smooth with time, and that will affect how it is to write on, too. Comments (14)No probably not, but they might consider fixing it. The top guy is going to blame the cabinet guy, and the cabinet guy is going to blame the top buy, and the builder is (has) told you the house had a 1 year warranty. The subs (cabinet/top guys) have to warranty a year (hence how the build warranties it). I would try the original installer/fab shop, if you talk calm and non-threatening they might come look at it, and offer to fix (or discount the fix). Of course, this depends on the reputation of the sub the builder hired in the first place. If it was my job, I would at least come look at it, and try to find the reason for the crack. Whether it is a quality/workmanship issue, or a damage/abuse issue. Depending on what I found, and the attitudes of those involved, I could be moved to either fix it, discount the fix, or nothing. In your case, you have nothing to lose by being nice and calm, and asking for a fair solution....See MoreWhat kind of kitchen counter-top is this; granite, quartz, glass?

Comments (7)@pippabean - thanks for the comment! It is at the corner overhang of an l shaped island. We worked with a reputable GC and installer. Neither mentioned anything about it needing support! The installer is coming out to inspect, curious what they will say....See More- 9 years ago
