Token-tell me about your tomatoes :-)
Comments (13)LOL. There is one thing. Where did I put that pack of lavender seeds when they came in the mail last September? I bought the collection from Park Seeds. I know they arrived. Now I can't find them. Most of my knowledge is based on many late nights online reading GardenWeb starting last September. I've probably read every thread in this forum and the seed starting forum. I spent way too much on dead plants last year. I wasn't going to make that mistake again. I won't be buying anything this year. Unless it's a bright red crepe myrtle....See MoreUltimate Tomato Cage system
Comments (13)What is the CRM? Always looking to improve my setup. As for the plants I usually just let them grow until they are able to reach one of the holes in the panel. I can pull the limbs out through the panel holes and then tuck them back inside the panels to support the plant. I'll try and take a pic when they get bigger so you understand. Sometimes if I get a plant that really wants to lay down I will tie it to a panel until it gains enough height to branch out and hold its own. I really dont have alot of problems with the plants getting to big, if they do I just pull through the top and let them grow back down on the outside. You can wrap limbs around the panel itself and the tomato holds itself up or use string. Im so jealous of they people down south showing tomatoes ready to eat!!!...See MoreContainer Ted, Tell me about Tomatoes for Atlanta!
Comments (3)Dave, I'm not having any problems per se. I'm growing in raised beds and I have done what I can to increase the sunlight, including taking out several trees. The shade I'm getting now is primarily from neighbor's trees. I haven't done too badly this year. I averaged about 10-12 tomatoes per plant and have had two flushes of that amount so far. (The San Marzano's have more, but I've lost a lot of them to BER). With luck I'll get a third flush before frost. The reason for the post is that with the small garden that I have, I am less able to experiment than some. And I know that Ted plants a LOT of varieties. So my logic was that what has done well for him seemed like a good place for me to pick varieties from for next year. By the way I planted Arkansas Traveler based on some of your posts, so thanks for that, it was our favorite of 2009. Susan...See MoreThe ultimate tomato
Comments (12)For those who are able to can their own, great! But for those of us who don't or can't, here's a tip. If you have a Trader Joe's near you, buy a 28 oz. can of their brand of whole tomatoes with basil leaf, no salt added. (These are the largest, firmest, reddest, ripest, most delicious canned tomatoes I have found. They look like Opalka or San Marzano Redorta.) Now, open the can and remove the largest and firmest; seed and drain those well and chop 'em up in salads etc. I've found this to be far better than supermarket fresh tomatoes in winter. They aren't even bad on cheeseburgers too, with lettuce and mayonnaise. I'm serious! I must be sick or something. I really NEED to eat tomatoes almost every day. It's my favorite food on the planet....See Morebooberry85
