Since they are in the same state as me and because of less shipping time involved,I figure it's less chance for things to dry out,I use Burnt Ridge and Raintree. The plants have so far been fine and for the most part they are both highly rated. One Green World in Oregon has also been decent. Brady

dogrunfarms: The best I found was Riverside Nursery, 5215 N Golden State Blvd, (559)275-1891. They sell many varieties that have done well in Dave Wilson Nursery fruit taste tests. You can find the results on line at Dave Wilson's website. They may be able to give you the results at Riverside. You didn't ask for variety recommendations but I'll give a few since I used to live in that area. For citrus I'd try Washington navel orange which will ripen in late winter and early spring. Chandler pummelo will ripen mid winter. Nectarines are great in that climate and the Arctic series is sensational. Arctic Star, Arctic Jay, Arctic Rose, Arctic Queen, and Arctic Blaze are the best of that group. You should try a pluot or two. I order on average 400 trees a year from a wide variety of nurseries. I used to order from Millers when I was a novice years ago. The blueberries and grapes I got from them were fine but their fruit trees were not true to label. I ordered Green Gauge plums from them and sold them after sizing them up a couple years only to find that they yeilded tiny bland purple plums. I ordered a range of varieties on what was supposed to be seedling rootstock- my what prcocious seedling stock it was- everything was bearing within 4 years, even the Baldwins which turned out to be Staymans. They replaced a clonal cultivar persimmon that never came out of dormancy as their policy requires with a persimmon that wasn't a grafted plant and lied that it was a sophisticated clonal propigation technique. They lie about their Canadigua conditions leading to hardier stock when they are talking about clonal scions attached to clonal roots- go figure. Small trees don't establish as well as large trees if they are of the same age as long as the roots haven't been butchered and both trees have been handled properly. My living depends on rapid establishment and small trees consistantly take an extra year or more to reach the 2.5" diameter at which I sell them. I have brought thousands of trees from infancy to baring age. If you want to know about nurseries, ask a commercial grower. Hobbyists can afford to be ignorant although some are more knowledgeable in some areas than pros. There's a reason why the pros pay more for larger trees- (I'm talking about 1 yr. bare root trees) their survival depends on rapid establishment and fruit to sell. One of the nurseries I order from tells of selling their runts to Millers for $1 apiece. I suspect the man was telling the truth but the only thing that matters is that it's entirely possible. If you want to order conventional varieties buy from a commercial supplier like Adams County Nursery, Hilltop or C+O and ask for the largest trees they've got.

Woodstock Nursery www.wallace-woodstock.com/catalog.htm currently offers that cultivar via mail-order. In a really brief search, they are the only retail mail-order source I saw that currently had it in stock. I checked their Garden Watchdog rating and it was not good. I didn't check TyTy or Willis, because I would never dream of ordering anything from them anyway. Their reputation is worse than not great...it's abysmal. TyTy had such bad ratings on Garden Watchdog, that they threatened to sue Dave's to get their listing removed. Dave's finally kind of gave up, removed their feedback ratings, but left a note that should be enough to at least raise a red flag for anyone searching there. There are numerous wholesalers that offer 'Radiant'. The cultivar should be generally available just about anywhere in the US that it will grow. Crabapples have fallen somewhat out of favor in the retail nursery business, but high-end nurseries special order stuff like this all the time for customers.
