Gosh, you can do a Google search (or a search on Ravelry) for patterns for knitted slippers and get good results. Many of them are the same pattern, but each person claims copyrights to it.

I'm in my 60s now, but when I was in grade school and junior high school, my grandmother taught me to make knitted slippers. Just this past Christmas, everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) got new knitted slippers from me!

You can make them with a single strand of yarn, but I always make them with a double strand of worsted weight. Cozier that way. I prefer to use superwash wool yarn, and primarily use Lion Brand Wool-Ease or Cascade 220 Superwash. So, you'll need two skeins -- either the same color, or one each of complimentary colors.

If you're making them for yourself or any other woman, use a US size 9 knitting needle. For men, use a US size 10.5 needle.

You'll also need to know how many inches long to make the slippers, depending on the wearer's shoe size. This shoe size guide will help.

Cast on 35 stitches. I use the long-tail cast-on, and leave a tail of about 8-12 inches. This allows plenty of yarn to stitch up the heel when you're done. Note that I always seem to leave more of a tail than I need, but you'll get two slippers out of one skein of yarn (or two out of two skeins if you use two strands for extra warmth/coziness), so you'll have enough. In fact, you'll have yarn left over, but I've never measured how much.

The first row you stitch will be the wrong side (actually, the inside of the slipper). You can always keep this straight in your mind because if the tail is hanging down from the needle tip end, you will be knitting on the wrong side.

OK. You've got your 35 stitches cast on. Here's the pattern:

Row 1: K11, P1, K11, P1, K11

Row 2: K across

Repeat rows 1 and 2 until the piece measures 2-1/2 inches less than the finished length that you want. The last row that you knit should be a wrong side row (so you will have done the K11, P1 across).

Now you will knit the toe section:

Row 1: *P1, K1* - repeat across the row, ending with a P1

Row 2: *K1, P1* - repeat across the row, ending with a K1

Knit this ribbing for 2 inches, and end after knitting a wrong side row (so you will have done the K 1, P 1 across).

Now, the decreases. During the decreases, you will see "Sl1, K1, PSSO" -- this means to slip 1 stitch from the left needle to the right needle, then knit 1 stitch and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch so that it is taken off the needle.

Row 1: Continue the ribbing for 9 sts (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1), then Sl1, K1, PSSO, K1, K2tog, rib for 7 sts (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1), then Sl1, K1, PSSO, K1, K2tog, then rib remaining 9 sts (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1)

Row 2: Rib the first 9 sts (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1), then P3, rib 7 (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1), then P3, then rib remaining 9 sts (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1)

Row 3: Rib the first 8 sts (P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1), then K2tog, K1, Sl1, K1, PSSO, then rib the next 5 sts (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1), then K2tog, K1, Sl1, K1, PSSO, then rib the remaining 8 sts (K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, P1)

You will have 27 stitches left on the needle.

Cut the yarn about 12" from where your knitting stops, so that you have another tail. Thread the tail yarn onto a yarn needle, and work it through the 27 stitches on the needle, then put it through those stitches a second time, removing each stitch from the knitting needle when you put the yarn needle through it the second time.

Pull the yarn tightly to close up the toe of the slipper, then stitch the two edges together (I use the "mattress stitch"). Depending on the size of the finished slipper, I knit the edges down to the first 6-8 rows of ribs (of the garter stitched foot part), then backstitch a couple of rows and make sure the yarn ends are hidden on the inside of the slipper. Cut off any excess yarn.

Now use the yarn needle with the original tail and stitch the heel end together. This will be done in an upside-down "T" shape, meaning that you'll start at the top of the opening, stitch down to the ridges that represent the bottom of the slipper, then squish the small part up to form the cross-section of the top of the T and stitch it together. It will look odd, but don't worry, it will be fine. Again, make sure your yarn ends are hidden on the inside of the slipper, then cut the excess yarn.

Add pompoms if desired.

This is a photo of the slippers I made for my niece. As you can see, one slipper is finished, and the second slipper has the yarn pulled through the toe but it isn't stitched together at all. (And you can see how long I leave the tails! LOL!)

OH those are nice. Not to be rude but I do like these better than the original ones posted. I think they'd be more comfortable and provide a better fit. If I were you, I'd make these, if I could knit that is! HA!

Hello ladies, I have made, many of the above slippers, but the one I am looking for is a little different. The soles have a better grip because of the ribbing. Thanks anyway for your reply.

ArkansasGirl, these slippers require only basic knit and purl stitches. The slip 1, knit one, pass the slipped stitch over is so easy, because it doesn't require anything special. Go to your local yarn shop, and they will help with learning the two basic stitches. And the slippers are so comfy and cozy. And you throw them in the washer and dryer when needed!

EnjoyingSpring, in my opinion the ribbing on the bottom of your slippers isn't really providing a better grip. Are you sure the person who made them didn't brush or spray on some anti-slip stuff? I added anti-slip to all of the slippers that I gave to people with wood floors, because I don't want to be the cause of anyone getting injured because of them.

Right now Ravelry has 270 free patterns for knitted slippers that have photos with the patterns. I'm sure you'll be able to find what you want.

Lindsey, I am a good knitter, I don't need a lesson in knit and purl. I am just looking for a specific pattern.

This is the closest thing I could find after searching and searching and finding nothing. It looks so simple, you'd think it would be readily available. This one is close but it ties on the top. Enjoyingspring, I have a couple of patterns for something similar. They are called pocketbook slippers. There are about 8 patterns free on the web that all look similar to what arkansas_girl posted. Yours look like they are made with heavier yarn and do not have the strap across the ankle. Other than that, I believe they are constructed the same. Here are links to two patterns:

This IS making me want to knit! Those slippers just look so simple that I would think if a person can knit very well, you could just look at them and figure it out? Right? I don't knit so maybe I'm just thinking of sewing and how you can just take something sewn and remake it if you are a seamstress. I actually thought I had a pair of crocheted booties but I can't find them...boohoo!!!!!

Hi donna_loomis, they are not quite like the pocket slipper. Whoever
knit them seems to have started at the top of the foot and then increased out to the
ribbing and then back up the other side. They are made of heavier yarn
as you said. I am attaching a picture of the side view of the slipper, there is a lip at the front of the slipper before the ribbing starts. Thanks for your input, I will keep looking. LOL

I'm late to the party, so I suppose the original poster will never see this, but...

This last picture you provided helps a lot. That is totally a pocketbook slipper, just no strap.

You make the triangle at the top (this is for flat-knit version), then increase by doubling all the stitches, then do a 2x2 rib (count up how many rows of dark rib there are and do that many, then switch to the 2nd color and continue)

Keep going in a reverse fashion right on up the other side, and halve the stitches at the point where you previously doubled them. When finished knitting, you seam the heel and the toe area, leaving the 2nd side of the triangle open for the foot to slip in.

I can't provide exact numbers because you need to measure to make up for th extra height needed to take its place. But follow the main pattern for pocketbook slippers to give yourself an idea of what to do. You could convert it to in the round fairly easily if you prefer.
