Trying to decide between the following bids

Carrier 24ANB760 AC, 58CVA110-22 furnace ,Coil CNPV 6024ALA and wi-fi Infinity Controller for $9000

And Trane XL16iAC , XV80 furnace 4TXC coil , thermostat (waiting to hear back on model number) for $9006

Trane XB16 AC, XV80 Furnace, $TXC coil (waiting to hear back on thermostat) for $8326

This is 5 Ton AC and 100,000 or 110,000 BTU furnace.

I know this is larger equipment than you think it should be , however I've had 5 people out, two load calcs and they all tell me we need 5 tons on the AC.

We have more volume than might be expected for the square footage and with

a large two story entry, a lot of heat is lost to the upstairs and the person this morning said he would not put less than 100,000 BTU furnace in because of that,

It looks to me like the higher bid Trane equipment is equivalent to the Carrier equipment.

First several questions

What is your location?

What size furnace and AC are you replacing?

What size sq footage home?

What were the design temps used for both in and outside, heating and cooling? You have the written results of load calc in hand?

Why an 80% eff furnace and not a high eff furnace?

The Carrier dealer is quoting a 2 stage AC condenser, the Trane dealer only single stage models. I wouldn't want the XB series condenser. Ask Trane dealer to change XL16i to XR17 on his dime depending on Trane thermostat. Then you would have similar quotes both Carrier and Trane. You will need a filter box for your system.

You keep starting new threads for the same discussion. This makes it difficult to follow what has already been stated. Stay with one thread and keep it going. If do start a new thread then post a link back to the previous discussions.

If you are going to get a 5 ton AC then spend the money on a 2-stage condenser. This will avoid a lot of short cycling on days when the temperature is in the 80s. It will also keep be much quieter when it is in the low stage.

I also recommend getting a 95%+ furnace. The 80K BTU furnace would be fine, but getting a 100K BTU would not be the end of the world if your contractor insists. Again get the 2-stage so it can operate in the low stage most of the time during the winter.

Trane's sister company is American Standard and for the most part especially on furnaces is similar if not identical. Condensers are different mainly cosmetics and cabinetry. Lennox has no relationship to Trane other than being another HVAC company and competitor. As far as Greenspeed HPs, I would not advise them where nat gas service is available. As said in prior posts, Rudd/Rheem is probably one of the most underrated and overlooked HVAC brands in residential marketplace. Solid equipment. IMO

The system proposed by the Carrier distributor does not include an Infinity controller. He is providing a Honeywell thermostat. Condenser is 24ACC636. Coil is either CNPVP3717. To repeat, the furnace is Infinity 80, model 58CVA090, 80% 90K BTU. He will price a whole house box filter for me, but as he explained it so me, its value to me looks pretty marginal. The American Standard distributor does not recommend a variable speed motor although he can provide one at a little higher price. His reason is that his experience has shown that the variable speed motors are more likely to burn out sooner and if not under warranty, they cost about $1250 to replace. I asked the Carrier distributor about experiences with the variable speed motor being more likely to burn out. He reports no troubles with variable speed motors and has been using them for 10 years of more. The ECM motors used are covered by ten-year warranty along with the rest of the equipment.

One thing a variable speed (as opposed to variOUS speed) blower can do is run at a lower speed on AC in order to perform humidity extraction. My Trane starts very low, then low and stays there for a while (several minutes). It then slowly picks up speed and reaches its highest setting. At shutdown, it slows down quickly then blows at very low for about 30 seconds before stopping. The heat profile is similar though the highest setting is more like medium. A modulating furnace will modulate (or change up and down) the gas flow to match the amount of heat that is needed. A single stage 'regular' furnace is all on / all off. A 2-stage would be off / half / full or something similar. I generally like to think (and others will correct me) that a condensing furnace is so efficient that the gas exhaust temperature is low enough that water vapor 'condenses' in the flue. A less-efficient design would have hotter exhaust and the vapor would not condense but go out the vent.

Northeast Oklahoma location.It is a pretty humid climate.

Replacing 22 year old Lennox 125,000 BTUH (all say this is too big but then most quote 120,000 . Carrier quoted 110,000.

Furnace is cycling a lot. I don't remember on the AC.

Design temps 19 and inside 70 in winter, 99 and 75 summer

Heating BTUH 51482, cooling BTUH 38315

Latent cooling Load 42759 BTUH required total capacity at 0.70SHR ---4.6 ton

80% because we won't live in house long enough to get pay out higher efficiency and

rates are pretty low here.

my own load calc that I did onlne calls for 43795 BTU cooling ( temps 100 and 75)

and heating 35941 BTU ( temps 72 and 14) we don't have many days with low temps of 14.

I'm sick of this and I think 5 different contractors, all from either the carrier site or Trane

should be enough.

Thanks for pointing out that the Trane compressor was not two speed. I've looked at two

many numbers and thought that it was.

Trane said I could pick my thermostat. They liked TCONT800

I'm leaning to the carrier since he is the only one who did a loadcalc. I asked for one from all the contractors when I called and they still didn't do one.

It is poor forum etiquette to post multiple threads on same subject plus being difficult to follow.

I gave you a Carrier Infinity high efficient 80 K furnace that has a 5 ton rated blower. Go back and read it.

Poor judgement getting the 80% efficient furnace Sorry probably not what you want to hear.

I fail to see where a 5 ton condenser is called for. Show me.

Wouldn't have the 803 stat, just works off algorithm that will go to high stage whether needed or not. HW Prestige 2.0 IAQ would be my choice for the Trane system.
