Definitely A. hippocastanum. Indian horse chestnut has a different leaf shape and flower, freezes back periodically even here in the Seattle area (Zone 8) - I seriously doubt it is actually hardy to Zone 7. There is an apparently universal misperception that the 0-10F, 10-20F etc. refer to how cold it gets in each zone rather than it being an averaging of how cold it gets. So to be a successful planting as low as Zone 7 Indian horse chestnut would probably have to be able to sail through occasional temperatures below 0F in a given location. I've seen indications made by effects of cold winters on specimens in my area that Indian horse chestnut is hardy to about 10F. The range given for Zone 7 is 0-10F and - especially if they were a commercial source - it seems someone may want to push the tree's ability a little bit. So they might say the tree is hardy to Zone 7, because the top of the range for Zone 7 is 10F. Of course, it being a wild species there could be some variation in hardiness between different forms. But I doubt there is a great range of genetic material of this particular item being grown in North America.

I save seed from Astilbes and also grow them from seed. Snip off the seed head when it is brown, then place it on a paper plate inside to dry further. When it is dry I usually run my fingers along the stem to remove the "pods", or tap the seed head on the paper plate. The seeds are like dust. I then wintersow them. One thing-they might not come true from seed but it is fun to see what you get:-) Rhonda
