Are you quilting this weekend? Feb. 8-10
Comments (22)Mary, I hope that you get your machine back quickly! I looks like not many people quilted this weekend... I didn't either. I worked and recovered from working and that was about it... This morning, I had a neighbor bang on my door at the crack of noon (which is equivalent to 5 AM to most people because I work my second job until 3 AM)... I threw on some clothes upside down and inside out and groggily answered the door, hair a mess, sleepy seeds in my eyes, and creases from the pillow case running down my face, to see what she wanted... fearing that she was going to tell me that something was wrong with my car or something (the last time she knocked on the door, my best friend had left the car in neutral and it was in the middle of the parking lot!). She said there was a vacuum in the trash that I should go look at. It was a relatively rare model, one with dual, counter-rotating brushes, but the housing is all cracked and it is dirty, so I'm not sure about investing time, energy, and money into it. I came so close to buying a vintage sewing machine at a thrift store yesterday! It was a vintage Singer Futura from 1974, the first electrinic machine ever made. It didn't come with any accessories, but it was so cool looking and truly a piece of history. Slant shank, two speeds, and magic bobbin that winds right in the bobbin case! I decided against it as that was 22 more dollars I can save for a Viking or Bernina combo machine, but it was tough to walk away from. Has anyone had any experience with the 'Slice' fabric cutter? Apparently it can cut out applique shapes. I'd buy it if I thought it could cut squares, but I don't know. Saw a video of it on Youtube last night and thought it looked like fun. Here's a link if anyone is curious. Here is a link that might be useful: Slice...See MoreWill you sew or quilt this weekend? June20-22
Comments (26)Linda, congrats on finding a house and getting yours on the market. Busy times. I envy your proximity to your grands. Everyone here sounds busy. And why are all the AC units going on the fritz? Ours on our boat can't begin to keep up with this heat - and of course we have no shade. Came back to boat last evening and it was 87 in our main salon. So I've been going over to my moms house to sew in her guest room. Spent a few hours yesterday cutting and bagging up the fabrics for Carol Doak's Mariners Compass Star blocks. I've got less than half done on that. Today I'll go back there and try to find bottom on one of my bins of stuff, to find a whole cloth quilt that is already marked and ready to go. I'm going to machine quilt it for a friends baby shower. Left it to the last minute... If I get that done and still have time energy I'll get a couple of bird houses done. They are so cute. VF, what a nice vase & flower for your friend. Our house is within 2-3 weeks of being finished. I can't wait to move into my own sewing room! Then I swear I'm going to be making draperies for months. Friday I went to a workshop on crazy quilting. The project was a needlebook. I Love mine. It's the best project I think I've done in a workshop. Have lots of hand embellishment left to do, then assemble it. I used silk dupioni's in yellows oranges and reds. Marjorie...See MoreAre you quilting this weekend?July 20-22
Comments (26)Thanks Lois! I am sure my sister will love it but she will have to buy a ticket just like everybody else....it is a raffle quilt for the family shelter that my sister works at! Mossy Radiation is the name of the pattern from the Kaffe Fassett book "Quilt Road" I am not a Kaffe Fassette fan, especially not his fabrics and how he uses them but this pattern spoke to me. If you google Mossy Radiation images you will see this quilt made in many different fabrics. Mary...See MoreAre you quilting this weekend? Sept. 20-22
Comments (22)Valerie, I've gotten myself a few times with the rotary cutter too, so I know how you feel (though the ruler usually gets the brunt of my clumsiness!) Hope it heals soon! This quilting thing is dangerous... I burned myself with the vintage travel iron yesterday! Glad everyone is staying busy... I've been piecing like a mad man until the wee hours of the morning. I'm still working on the puff quilt... I'm watching Law and Order SVU while I cut and pin and that helps the time go faster. It's really quite pleasant and makes the fun part (sewing) seem to come more quickly. Tonight, for the first time, I decided to listen to music while sewing... I sewed about 20 squares with no bobbin thread! When I don't have headphones in, I can hear when the bobbin runs out because the machine sounds different, but when I've got music going I'm stitching in ignorant bliss. I've noticed that the faster the song is that comes on, the faster I sew! I caught myself flooring the pedal without even realizing it! I also accidentally left the vintage travel iron plugged in all day and went merrily off to work... I could have burned down an entire apartment complex because the vintage travel iron doesn't have auto off... and it's vintage! But, I did turn it off, so all is well for now. I need to stop using it! Of course we all know the fastest way to call a cat is to lay out unsewn quilt squares... it works better than a can of tuna!...See Morenannykins
