I tried Burpee's Early Girl Bush Hybrid this year for growing in containers. I have three in 5 gallon pots and two in a single 10 gallon pot. They seem very vigorous. No ripe tomatoes yet, but plenty of green ones. Very little support required and it looks like I'll see about 30-40 tomatoes on each compact 18-24 inch bush. Great for Patios. Nlight

Columnar apples are excellent choices for containers. And while not really trees, so are blueberries. But neither are very 'exotic' :-) Dwarf citrus also do well in containers but need some sort of winter protection. Perhaps placing your container on a dolly or attaching heavy duty casters to something like the half whiskey barrel would facilitate movement. Any of the dwarf or minidwarf fruit trees should do well in large containers. Check to see if your choices need a second type for pollination. There's a number of different exotic fruiting plants typically available at local nurseries and seem to be more available each year but most of these tend to be shrubs or vines rather than trees.....maybe you might want to consider enlarging your choices. The other consideration with growing fruit in small spaces is to espalier the various trees. It takes some time for training and attention to pruning but you can get a lot of different trees in to very small spaces this way. You could actually construct an espaliered fence around your backyard.

I just planted another 45 seeds today, 15 each of the varieties I mentioned in my previous post. I also planted another 30 old seeds, but I don't have much hope for them as only a few sprouted so far. I am just about maxed out on area under my lights and heat mat and oven, so I think maybe around 150 seedlings will be it until it gets warm enough to leave all of them outside all day and night. Whether I start a second batch of 150 seedlings will depend on whether I can sell most of what I started already. I am hoping that my seedlings get big enough to sell before the Fullerton Arboretum has its monster tomato and pepper sale. Looking on Craigslist I only see one seller so far selling tomato plants, but the number will most likely increase in March. My tallest seedlings are now about three inches tall, and it has been about four weeks since I planted the first ones. I have been giving them some potassium nitrate dissolved in rainwater, as it says on the Pro-Mix bag to start supplemental feeding as soon as the seedlings get their first set of true leaves as Pro-mix doesn't have any fertilizer in it. I believe someone posted Cal-nitro was a good fertilizer to use, maybe I'll go buy some.
