Nearly Finished French Ikea Kitchen - need advice for backsplash
Comments (1)Hi, I dunno where you are in France, but if you're in the northern part of France (Loire valley and farther north), you should be able to find real slate tiles intended for outdoor terrace/patio paving in any DIY store. I do not see why you could not use those as a backsplash. If you're in the south, it is almost impossible to find slate as it is not considered a local material ... If you're looking for a better selection of tiles than the ones at Castorama and Leroy-Merlin, you should look at stores that are specialized in tiles and sanitaryware (here in Paris area, they are called CMR or Espace Aubade). I personnaly think that a slate backsplash would provide too much contrast ... I would look for a white/cream tile with a matte finish but an interesting texture (like the "Clays" series for Casamood) or something that evokes concrete ('Zoom' from Villeroy&Boch, 'Masterplan' from Lea Ceramiche in 'Grigio' shade), or glass mosaic with metallic effects (Vetro Metallico from Casamood). The later would recall the mettalic touch of your countertops ... As a side note, I've never seen a good looking 'wall' tile here, I always use tiles intended for floors ... links : Ceramiche Lea 'Masterplan': http://www.ceramichelea.it/acm-on-line/fr/Home/produits/collections/cardCatmasterplan.33.1.20.2.html Villeroy&Boch Zoom : http://www.villeroy-boch.com/fr/fr/home/produits/carreaux/pieces-a-vivre.html?sid=Zoom Casamood 'Clays' : http://www.casamood.com/serie.asp?id=107&idlv=108&idd=108&idcol=4&num=4...See MoreKitchen's done but is so, so, so very noisy
Comments (16)Ice1, onedogedie and EAM44, I like the idea of cloth on the walls. How does one keep it clean, though, especially in or adjacent to a kitchen? And I have no connection to Iceland other than a fascination with the land and the culture. Someday I hope to visit there. Is that what "Ice" represents in your name, Ice1? I love the idea of girls taking a name from their mothers and since Mary was my mom's name, "Marysdottir" allowed me to combine two loves in one name. I've been kind of shy about the idea of sharing my kitchen. I've been a lurker for so long, basing so much of my planning for this kitchen reno and an earlier bathroom reno from all the amazing people here on GW, that it feels odd to share my amateur efforts with people who have created such beautiful spaces! But I guess that is how we all learn from the decisions of others. I am very pleased with how the kitchen turned out so on my next day off I will try and capture some decent pictures in good light and share them. Funny you should mention the wallpaper. We have had it for more than twenty years and are only just now thinking about replacing it with something more subtle. I still love it and given that it is vinyl, it may be impossible to remove, so it just may be on those walls until the kids inherit and have to sell the house! I think it drives our cabinet designer crazy though. Every time she sees it she looks ill and mutters about all the colour we have in here. She is a bit of a minimalist but she coped with all of my demands on the cabinets, even the things that seemed too "old fashioned" so I have to give her credit for being open minded. Thank you all for your kind words. You've given me the courage to post a reveal!...See Morea (nearly done) kitchen for christmas!
Comments (33)It's me again. I am loving reading all your amazing comments! Thanks for the positive feedback! We have been working so hard on this house rebuild project for so long, it feels great to hear that other people actually like what we are doing! Here's a rendering of what the fridge wall will eventually look like. Here's what it looks like now fallingwaters - We live in the Southern California mountains and look out to the mountain range across from our canyon. We have about an acre of land on two levels and a running creek at the side of the property. The house sits below the road so you can see part of our fence up by the road through the kitchen window. Here are some more pictures that show the view. pharaoh - Your comment gave me a big smile - I am the designer, DH is the contractor and we were lucky enough to have our cabinets done by my insanely talented brother-in-law. Sochi - great to hear from you. I am doing a backsplash and I can't believe it but I've found it already! It's a white ceramic that is textured, meaning it's not flat. It comes in large format and looks like lots of little shimmery white squares. It's really hard to photograph, but I will try to get a good shot and post it. I am in love with it! We are going to wait until the uppers are all in to install it. What direction are you thinking for yours? rockybird - I originally thought we would do concrete countertops but DH was never really sold on the idea - maybe because I had in mind that he would DIY-it! I am VERY happy with this caesarstone. cat mom - I love your table too! what kind of wood is it? breezygirl - Thanks! There were some really great suggestions about my kitchen layout on here. We were so far along at the time that the only thing I could convince everyone to do was to move the sink down, and I'm sure glad we did that! I actually love the offset sink and it gives me a lot more work space between the sink and the range....See MoreMy ikea kitchen reveal wouldn't be nearly as cool without this forum!
Comments (47)@shelayne he's darn lucky he's so cute because otherwise he might not have made it this far! ;) @raee the cabinet was rather tricky for my builder and took a bit of finagling, so I feel fortunate that it worked out as well as it did. It's not something I would have felt comfortable trying to do myself! But then again, I'm a chicken too :)...See Morehappyallison
