Well, where to start? You said you did research. Well, obviously not enough, or the wrong kind, or you would have found that succulents should never be planted in terrariums. They need good air circulation, and prefer low humidity. Terrariums provide high humidity, and no drainage. Good drainage is essential to succulents. Wet roots can lead to rotten roots, and death of the plant. Also, if you did proper research, you would have seen that most succulents need as much bright, direct light as possible. There is no way around it. So if you have no window space with bright enough light, you either have to add supplemental lighting, or switch to plants which thrive on lower light.

yes. my research sucked. i have no idea there was that much technical stuff to "gardening" inside n outside. i just thought.. ok. pick a plant , figure out how to build a terrarium . n thats it. boy was i wrong. i do have windows with bright light, just not direct sun light. i just recut the root up to where has no browning. going to let them sit out for a week n see how they r growing out.

Don't feel too bad, Sara Chau. We all make mistakes. It doesn't help that many places sell these succulent terrariums that are truly set up for failure. They look great when you buy them, but that doesn't last.

At least you knew how to salvage your plant. That's a good start!

Yes, Sara, we've all made mistakes - anyone telling you a terrarium is good for succulents is immediately guilty of succulent gangster fraud, however. Once of the many virtues of these plants is they often survive attempts to grow them in inappropriate places and, as you've found out, live to try again - this can be done over and over most of the time. Yours look salvageable for sure. Christopher knows what he's talking about - take it as gospel and go do the right thing.

If you make a terrarium out of that bowl, put plastic cling wrap over the top. If you are careful, you can stretch the plastic wrap over the top so it looks like glass. Then take a razor blade and cut the excess plastic away from the rim. If you do it right, you will barely notice it. Then I poke a tiny hole in it with a pin to equalize pressure.

Many of us have broken the pots the plants were in - it just makes into interesting pieces of pots which I'll one day make into a floor mosaic (although I wouldn't use clear glass). These plants are hardier to beyond expectations - I expect the plants will be again salvageable. Please show us a pic of what you've got and we'll work from there, assuming success at every level (except the broken pot one, of course).

Buy a few little terra cotta pots. Put the cuttings in dry soil and put them on a sunny windowsill. Let them sit for two weeks (they will look sad, but don't worry), then see if any roots have started. If so, water a very, very little, once a week, then a little more as they start getting better. They will bounce back. Succulents can take a ton of abuse.

some of these feel hard. but some are mushy..think they mushy ones are a goner.. n i probably can stick the firm ones in the soil pretty soon. what do you think?

these are kinda callused. i assume.. correct?? i think i can just stick them in the soil tomw n let it happen..

transferred some of my plants from the broke glass to another one..

these are just sad. i just put them in the dirt after 5 days.

waiting for them to propagate. im supposed to leave them alone for weeks and misty water on them once a week if they get too dry.

The container needs to have a drainage hole.

If you really want a glass terrarium, the safest plants you can grow in them are airplants. Throw the dirt out, put in some pretty stones and lay some tillandsia on top of the stones....it's beautiful and lasts much, much longer then succulents and most other types of plants would in glass. I have a few of these around my home and love it. Just throwing an idea out there....

tillandsia - common name air plant. no soil needed.
with your other succulents, you are making same mistake. posts above are full of good advice, you should try to follow some of it.
your new container is more open than previous one, but soil still looks very peaty and no drainage. rocks on the bottom are only temporary solution. i would consider succulent terrarium only temporary, or for experienced growers.
you have plants that could look really good if you do what has been suggested.

Idk, I know its popular to put tillandsia in terraniums/bell jars/etc but I'd be careful as they need lots of air circulation.....not saying it won't work, just to make sure u have a fan on them or smth!

(OT but I was at this trendy little boutique the other day and they were selling succulents under bell jars! Its cute, I get it, but come on.......)

A bunch of rocks on the bottom for drainage will not work. You need a drainage hole.

It's been said a few different times in this thread, and all over the C&S forum: wrong container, wrong soil. You see them all over, but plants in bowls with no drainage or airflow will never thrive, even if by some miracle they do manage to stay alive. Rocks in the bottom is not a solution; there needs to be a hole in the bottom.

Most people around here will recomend that "cactus soil" be mixed 50/50 with perlite for proper drainage because as it comes out of the bag it holds too much water.

I'm glad to hear you are listening to the advise provided and getting a lot with a drainage hole. Go ahead and pick up some perlite with it for you to mix 50/50 with the C&S soil you got. If you like the look of the terrarium you can achieve a similar look with a wide, shallow terra cotta pot (or any wide shallow lot with proper drainage). You can set up a nice little succulent garden in that. Also, if you don't get good light I recommend getting a lamp to provide some supplemental lighting. I use a compact florescent bulb to get mine through winter. Get the brightest one possible
