newbie here - question about growth habit of Hoya
Comments (5)Hi again. If the blooms aren't the "star type", are you sure it's multiflora? Multiflora is also known as the "shooting star hoya". Do you have a pic? The weird thing is that my neighbor came to me today with her multiflora that I gave her and asked me the same question! The stems are growing so quickly that they are starting to go out to the sides. I told her that she can either let them keep growing that way until they hang over the side of the pot and start to hang down like a hanging plant, or she can use a trellis (or bamboo stakes...which is what I use for my 4 foot multiflora). It's really up to your preference. I personally like when it grows upwards. Let me know if you'd like to see a pic of mine, with the stems clipped to bamboo stakes. Comments (14)I think the triple 10 is enough nutrition for the plants.. if most of your other hostas are growing fine in the same native soil, I wouldn't assume that there is a lack of micronutrients.. micronutrients generally are relative to soil type.. and more often than not you will never have to supplement for a micronutrient... I would honestly go for either the reverting to adolescence theory or the root bound or smothering theory... a replanting would be nice...just to see the roots and get the soil cultivated again... growing in pots with native soil instead of growing medium is like growing in clay soil... the roots are very compacted and have a hard time moving and growing and they don't breath nearly as well...they smother...like melissa said, I would replant and drop in some organic matter and worms in the bottoms and then plant over that... then you'll have worms present to keep the soil cultivated a bit better... I haven't much experience with pots... though I've been told that too heavy of watering washes most of the fertilizer right out of the bottom of the pot before the plant even gets a chance to use some.. I would say a planted pot wouldn't have as much of an issue with this as one unplanted... tho food for thought... Thanks John...See MoreApron habit
Comments (38)My favorites are the halter style where you can adjust the neck opening by tugging on the straps at the waist. Easy on & off & no buckles to adjust. I'm just 5'2", so this allows me to adjust for my shorter proportions. I like a medium weight - not too flimsy, but not stiff. Easy wash - so no fancy trim or buttons & bows. I've found sturdy but attractive ones @ Williams Sonoma & Target. Want to see some nice ones? Go to the Bella Pamella website. I have one of theirs in Green Check with the matching "Lucy" headscarf. My sister dons the scarf when we bake holiday pies together - it's more her than me;) Their quality is great in terms of wormanship, but their fabric is not as heavy as I like. DD took one in their "Katherine" style (cool design w no ties) and made some for her, and my GDD in blue ticking fabric. They wear them for gardening, as well as for kitchen work. A great style for kids doing crafts, too. This post was edited by amck on Wed, Sep 24, 14 at 17:24...See MoreGold Blush: Shade? Habit? Thorns? BS?
Comments (58)I've been meaning to update this since it started setting bud. This Rose seems to be a late bloomer due to its R. Moschata heritage. It took until mid June set bed while everything else had already finished its first flush. If it repeats this behaviour next year then I will know if that is the reason for sure or if it was the crazy spring weather with its late May freeze. It already had some nice buds by 6:21 as you can see in the pictures and was blooming less than a week later. It has not stopped blooming and has tons of flowers as I type. A great rose with a lovely fragrance that I highly recommend. It is a thorny monster and I have yet to figure out how to prune it. I do know if you cut it short it will send out numerous long canes from that point. I have not yet decided if I will cut out the small growth next year to try and have it grow as a more traditional climber. I think it would make a very nice large Bush if desired. There is a fair amount of black spot here and it does lose quite a few leaves. That is the main downside. However where I better with my watering and fertilizing routine I feel that might help correct it. Vigorous is the word I would most used to describe this Rose. It also has a lovely light fragrance that varies in intensity and tone....See Moreemma
