Greenhouse Kits
Comments (16)Back to the original question. We bought a greenhouse from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. It had been erected, used for 8 or 10 years, then disassembled and stacked in a pile, with all the glass packaged in cardboard. We bought it online (under $900), then drove 6000 miles roundtrip to pick it up. It came with no instructions. Took two days of sorting parts to figure out how it would go together, then another two weekends to build the foundation (8" poured concrete footings around the perimeter, capped with treated 4X4, then 1/2" polyester to keep the treated lumber from corroding the aluminum). Assembling the aluminum frame took two days, then another couple of days to install all the glazing. One more day to run water and natural gas underground into the house and install the vented tube heater. It would have been a lot easier with a complete set of instructions, but it turned out beautifully with a little effort. If we don't count the trip to Vancouver (which we turned into a two week vacation), our total cost comes to under $3000 for a 16' X 25' glass and aluminum greenhouse, including site prep, foundation, gas, water, automatic vent operators, heater and electricity. We still have to fabricate shelving and run electrical outlets, purchase and install electric louvers and exhaust fan for warmer weather, perhaps swamp cooler for the deep summer here in Texas. I couldn't be happier with the whole project....See Morebuilding a greenhouse out of old windows
Comments (71)So we just started building our second glass house. If you search under my user name you can find pics of the first one. We moved even before we got to finish that one so the new owner got a great perk with the house :) Got the foundation and floor in this weekend (now have to run down and get the building permit!) and am waiting on Home Depot for 2 16 foot beams I need for the top sides. This one will be 12 x 16 with 10 foot high walls and and an 8 foot ceiling peak. The first greenhouse was 8 x 12 with 8 foot walls and a ceiling height dictated by the windows I had. This new one will have a metal roof so we will have a much steeper pitch. I went to pick up some windows from a lady on Craigslist and she also threw in these 2 great old french doors - really narrow and tall. They will be the focal point of the building. Can't wait to get the walls up. It's like putting a puzzle together. Someone on my facebook page said:" You know you can build a pvc hoop and plastic greenhouse for about $250." I said it wasn't really going to be used as a greenhouse and I wanted something a lot nicer looking than that for my glass garden house. It has to fit in with my 1780 colonial....See MoreWannabe Greenhouser
Comments (4)I don't think anyone counts on the Christmas lights for supplemental lighting. I used them last year, and will again this year, to keep the soil in my potted lemon tree at or above 55 degrees (a critical temp, I understand, for citrus roots) when the rest of the GH occupants could get by on 50. I simply wrapped the string around the pot several times and then strung the excess where I pleased. If you decide to use lights, please please please be sure you use exterior grade lights! It is still absolutely critical to have these on a GFIC outlet and, even then, to use utmost care ... water and electricity are a bad combination! My greenhouse is a little Harbor Freight 6x8 and I found that it got very warm in there on sunny days, even when the temperatures outside were freezing. Some method of venting you little structure will be necessary, and a small fan for air circulation probably advisable in any case. You sound very resourceful and like you're having fun with this ... keep it up and good luck!...See MoreGreenhouse benches or not?
Comments (9)Superphosphate: I try not to have much left come summer and don't grow anything for fall. Yet. Ground would definitely be cooler in the houses I use. I don't have fans. Lenten rose: I'm embarrassed to admit that even with pre-emergent and occasional careful spraying of herbicides, sometimes I pluck a weed that has grown up thru the pallets. You are so right--kneeling and crawling on gravel is not fun. botanybob: Your solution is probably the most workable. If I can get someone to ok the wood legs. Can you slide flats across the hardware cloth? That may be what is used on the current tables, but what with the sagging and all, nothing slides. Angle iron (I think that's what it is) is used now for the legs, and let me tell you, those legs can sink real quickly thru the gravel and soil when under a heavy load. It looks like I will be growing in the same small hoop houses and getting some new tables built. Was hoping for more spacious conditions next year, but not gonna happen. Will draw up plans for your type tables and give it a try with the boss. Thanks again for all your help....See Moremaark23 TX/8a
