single vs. double bowl sink?
Comments (6)I love my double sink, and I can't imagine not having one. I usually have dishes in the large side, and I use the small side as a prep sink. The disposal is in the small side, and as I cook, I dump food waste into the small side and things that need to be washed in the big side. If you are going to have a prep sink, I think a single bowl main sink would be fine. Without that secondary prep sink, I know that I would be unhappy with a single sink....See MoreSingle Bowl vs. Double Bowl
Comments (13)I have a Franke VNX160. It fits a 36in cabinet and has 2 bowls in a 2/3-1/3 configuration. The big side is large enough to soak the grates from the cooktop. The small side is large enough to rinse veggies, drain pasta and the like. My old double bowl was a PITA. It was about the same size as the Franke but had 2 equal bowls. Neither was big enough to soak anything large. I think there are 2 factors to consider. The first is how wide a sink can your space accommodate. If the sink base cabinet is less than 30in, you should probably go with a single bowl. The bowls in a double bowl will likely be too small. If the sink base is 33in or larger, you might want to consider a double bowl with the 2/3-1/3 arrangement. Take your casserole to the store to see if it fits. But when push comes to shove, just choose what *you* want since *you* have to live and work with it....See MoreSingle vs double bowl sink - a Singaporean dilemma
Comments (47)Tony, I have lived and worked and looked in Asia and am familiar with no hot water, no DW kitchens. That being said, I think a separate water source and prep area is extremely critical.. Especially in Asian style cooking, water is your most often used ingredient. Instead of a double bowl, I would suggest a single bowl cleanup sink.. Even 24 " would work or one of those IKEA sinks that are deeper front to back..and a small prep-sink (think a bowl big enough to wash spinach or 2kgs of veggies.) that is away from the cleanup area.. It is yucky to wash veggies near a pile of smelly dirty dishes. Especially without dishwasher, these dishes do tend to pile up until they are scrubbed and put away at end of the day. My friend in Mumbai remodeled her flat and added a prep sink and really loves it. She used a really narrow sink as she has a tiny kitchen. small bar sink j Here is a link that might be useful: Small stainless prep sink...See More36' single bowl vs. 36' double bowl - which is truly most useful?
Comments (14)I haven't installed mine yet, but it is going to be the very large Blanco Silgranit Super Single #511-652 in the Anthracite color. I really wanted a single-bowl sink, which I remembered we had in our house growing up. Somewhere in the 1980's my Mom re-did the kitchen, and that's when we got a double-bowl. And in the various apartments and houses I've lived in since then, they've all come with double-bowl sinks. But in all these years, I've wanted to go back to the single-bowl sink of my childhood. As others have stated, you can soak large pans with still room left in the sink, and there's no divider to get in your way. And I just like the way a rectangular single-bowl looks too, so simple and spare. I was all set to get stainless steel single-bowl sink until this Forum (which is what makes this Forum so great!). I read all the enthusiastic threads about Silgranit, and decided to get that instead of SS. I've always disliked the water marks of SS, and Silgranit won't have that problem. If you do a search on this Forum, you'll see great photos of the Silgranit sinks that people have, and I like the Anthracite, but it also comes in brown, biscuit and white. I've also learned the value of an "offset drain", a phrase which I'd never heard of before this forum. The link below shows the sink I've bought. It fits in a 36" base. It says it's a drop-in, but it can also be installed as an undermount, which is what I am doing. Here is a link that might be useful: Blanco Silgranit Blancodiamond Super Single...See Moretracie_erin
