I remember those horrible revolving disco strobe lights--I always felt a little dizzy in that situation. I guess otherwise I haven't been amidst a whole lot of flashing lights.

Yes, I always told people, "Don't take me to a disco!"

My most recent experience with a flickering light was at the Walmart pharmacy, where there was a line (of course) and a failing fluorescent light above us.

But no chance of epilepsy?

My brother with epilepsy could not be around flashing lights and was on strong medications for the seizures.

Flashing lights outside give me a headache, which I can prevent by wearing sunglasses. I also developed headaches after going to 3D movies.

I don't like flashing lights either, the ones that flash repetitively like some Christmas lights. I have a flashlight that flashes an emergency signal. I don't like that either.

They're annoying as heck.

When there's a light above a ceiling fan --- that really drives me nuts.

I have a lot of trouble with them. Especially if they are red and blue lights flashing in my rear view mirrors.

Major migraine trigger for many people, including me.

I don't have a problem with them, except to find them very annoying.

There was a guy who was bicycling through the neighborhood at all different hours and he had a strobe light in the front in order to be seen.

I told a friend of his to let that guy know that that kind of light can cause an epileptic seizure in someone that is sensitive to that kind of thing. He didn't know that and did talk to the guy who changed his light to a solid beam. Much better!!

I would have to look away from that light. I didn't like having it going off and on that way.

I have seen signs, like in museums, saying something like "Caution, strobe lights in use". Is that for epileptics?

I don't but I have a friend that does. When we go to the movies she has to close her eyes when they do the theater thing with train tracks or whatever and things going all over the place. Cannot watch anything in 3-D. She said she never had a problem until her first pregnancy.

Georgysmom, I'm like your friend; I had to crawl over a whole lotta knees the first time I went to an Imax movie, I was so desperate to get out.

The reason bicyclists use flashing lights is so that they can call more attention to themselves, which I appreciate as a driver. But I know they can cause problems in some people--dh can have a migraine triggered.

It doesn't make me dizzy, but both the flickering fluorescent lights and the light slanting through trees affects me in a way I'm not sure I can describe -- mostly just a uneasy, unsettled, unpleasant feeling. I also always would have trouble working on a CRT computer screen that was set to the default 60 Hz refresh rate.

Another thing that bothers me is the new LED based Christmas lights or LED based tail lights that many newer cars have. Most people looking at them don't even realize they are flashing because they flash so fast, but they are obvious to me, and annoying.

I forgot about those CRT monitors, Bob! At the last job I had that used them, I changed the refresh rates on mine and the bookkeeper's. She was so happy with the change, but the other people had no idea what we were talking about. They didn't see the flicker at all.

I guess I won't be getting LED Christmas lights! Thanks for the heads-up.

Wow, thanks for posting this alisande, I know just what you mean, but wasn't aware they actually have a name for it! I don't feel 'dizzy' in the sense of the surrounding area spinning, but I'll get what I call a nauseous head feeling, because I tell people it's my head that feels nauseous, not actually my stomach. I know exactly how you feel about the sunlight coming through the trees.

I live near a major city, and whenever we drive into the downtown area, I have to look down if it's a sunny day, as the sun shining between each high rise building as you pass them at a fast speed gives a sensation of flickering lights which is also disturbing. I wear those solar shield sunglasses that do help a bit if I'm the driver and unable to totally look away from the source of the problem.

Glad I did, Pickyshopper. I read up on it a bit yesterday, and discovered the topic is addressed quite a bit with pilots. As you can imagine, dangerous situations can present in the air. Propellers can produce the flicker, and it's often an issue with helicopters.

Flashing lights don't bother me, sounds bother me. It drives me nutty when I go to a restaurant with music that's too loud.

Do what I do, ArkansasGirl--carry earplugs wherever you go. I listen to live music often, but can't handle too many decibels. I also use them for previews (and sometimes movies) in the movie theater, and anywhere else I might encounter loud noise.

I also keep a pair in the kitchen. Grinding almonds in the food processor, for instance, hurts my ears. I have tinnitus, and don't want it to get any worse.

I have a little problem with flashing lights, just thought I didn't like them, but the mention of sun light through the trees is something I'm bothered by. I really never gave it much thought that others had the same problem.

When I drive by the trees with the sun shining I feel like I'm in an old time flicker movie.
