Car suddenly accelerats

This morning my wife was driving our 2013 Chrysler 200 when she came to a stop to let a coworker pass by. After the coworker passed by the cars engine reved really high and the car took off with my wife's foot still on the break. When she got it to stop, she put it in reverse and it was still reving high and then she put it in drive and the reving stopped and she parked the car. What would cause a car to do this?

This is a really big deal.

Since this is the sort of thing that will kill you or yours, the dealer needs a phone call. If they deny that it's a known cause, ask them to connect you to the office so you can verify who is authorized to receive legal papers. You can look up the National Transportation Safety Board on line and they will be able to tell you if there's a recall or safety service bulletin for such a known nasty behavior like that.

I had similar experience. The floor mat had moved out of position.

Suddenly turkeys?!

After the breeding frenzy in late winter and early spring, the turkeys here disappear for a few months. The hens go off into the woods to lay eggs and don't reappear until June if they've successfully hatched a brood. If they lose the brood the hens may return earlier. I don't know where the toms go. I did see one lone tom most of this summer. Two years ago was a really bad year for poults - I think the predators got most of them. This year there was a cooperative event and six hens stayed together with about thirty poults in tow. This was a great traffic stopper on our small rural streets. There was a later, smaller brood too. June 19, 2014 Hens with small poults. July 31, 2014 Hens with growing poults. After they returned I saw turkeys all summer, mostly hens and the growing poults, but few toms. Now that it's getting colder the toms are back too. I suspect there's enough food in the woods during warm weather and turkeys can forage by themselves. The hens with poults to feed probably appreciate my buffet and fresh water (neighbors feed them too) and they may feel safer here than in the woods. In Massachusetts the wild turkey hunting season is Spring: Apr. 28 - May 24 and Fall: Oct. 20 - Nov. 1. Claire Edited to add a tree since this is the Trees Forum. Juniperus virginiana - Eastern Red Cedar shown with turkeys above. This post was edited by claire on Sun, Nov 30, 14 at 11:01

Lost my mother suddenly, tragically and too soon. :-(

I lost my Mom suddenly 6 weeks ago due to health issues, so I understand part of what you're feeling. It's hard dealing with unexpected deaths or tragic accidents. From what I've learned in the grief group I attend, you have to let yourself feel the pain or it will come back later in a worse way. So I kind of think it's too soon for you to go back to your normal routine, although I would never give anyone advice since this is all so very individual. This sentence you wrote struck me...."She was dealt a really bad hand in life and coped the best she could, she was the best Mom she could possibly be giving the pain she was exposed to and the subsequent decisions she made to deal with that pain."......I think it's very healthy that you acknowledge the cards your Mom was dealt and give her credit for coping the best she could, yet you also know that she made decisions in the way she coped too. This is a healthy way to look at it. It sounds like you were very close and I know how hard it is to lose a Mom you are close to. I hope you can find some joy and strength with your husband and kids.

@shead - bry911, that’s uncalled for and unfair. I don’t see this poster as being a troll. They have a justifiable right to be angry. They have, in essence, been robbed. With, respect I don't think it was uncalled for or unfair. Aside from the poster's increasingly confrontational tone and name calling, the general escalation of facts and drama is textbook trolling. A simple question is asked or statement offered and then respondents are kited along with more and more drama until a simple question or position becomes a long drawn out dramatic series of posts that are increasingly emotional. This poster is a troll, it may not even be through a conscious effort, but there is no doubt that this series of posts meets every requirement for trolling. I have not been in any way confrontational and yet have been a target of escalating hostility for trying to help. How else would you describe the escalation other than trolling? Please keep in mind that trolling is a behavior and not an intent. ETA: This refers to a meme I posted about trolling... The meme basically says trolls want to upset other people because they are upset.

Direct sunlight would be outside in direct sun. The sun coming through your windows is already going to be filtered light. It would be very good for your tree to repot into a container with drainage, use something like the 5:1:1 mix and place it right up in front of a southern facing window where it recieves as much light as possible. I grow quite a few ficus benjaminas. They have the same general needs as your tree. Naturally, these trees want as much light as possible. Anything that says they don't like direct light is false. It's just that indoor grown leaves can't handle full outdoor sun unless acclimated. In the winter months, I keep the tree in front of a southern facing window with the addition of grow lights. I have five 55w (250w equivalent) 5500k grow lights above the tree. In the summer, I acclimate the tree over a span on a couple weeks and then place it in full direct sun all summer. That is when it puts out the most growth. Literally grows a couple feet every summer. the tree is 7 feet all and was under 4 feet tall when I got it a year and a half ago. Currently in an 18" terra cotta pot in Al's 5:1:1 mix.

The first thing you should do is have it towed to the dealer. Situations like that have killed people on more than one occasion.
Also you should report it to the NTSB So everything is documented. Another thing that you should do is teach your wife or anyone else as far as that goes. If something like that happens the first thing you do is turn the vehicle off. Don't start shifting gears back and forth or anything else to get it to stop. JUST SHUT IT OFF. TIME IS CRITICAL.

Most if not all new cars have an anchoring system that keeps the floor mats anchored so it can't move and get under the accelerator pedal. All of mine have a twist like button system. Now it is possible that owners when they take the mats out to clean do not anchor them back in place. If that is the case then they would be responsible for the own demise. Or what ever injuries that occurred. Also police department and insurance investigators are trained so that the first thing they look at is to see if the mat is anchored.
