Betta fish and heaters

Hi, I just bought a little betta fish. I appsolutly love him! He now has a 2.5 gallon fish tank, no filter, but i have a little 10 watt heater for him, because the room tempature was just too cold for him. The heater is a National Geographic heater, and it automatically shuts off once it hits 80 degree's. Its currently 72 degrees in the tank, The fish seems pretty happy with this tempature. I have read stories of something going wrong with the heater, and over heating and cooking the fish. I DO NOT WANT THIS TOO HAPPEN, is it ok, if I unplug the heater when im gone all day at work, and plug it back in where i can monator it.
